Sounds good to me!
Julie, one more objection because I really think tht we can do this right this year and have the precedent. What we've done, by diluting the nominations down this far, is essentially made it meaningless. Everyone has everything and the there really isn't competition. WWW has the time. The list is already there. We haven't spent an inordinate time on the nominations and we stated that last year we would start the time frame. I'm still in favor of rewarding our recent authors. I think that's the point and I don't think the current system is doing that.
If we said we'd do it this year and haven't done it, what's to compel us to do it next year? Right now is the perfect opportunity to just do it. Everyone will alsways find some kind of excuse or some kind of objection. We can do it right this go around and reward our authors who updated, completed and wrote in 2009 for 2009 awards. Some of those others have been around for years and have had their time. I four purpose is to highlight these new folks and get new writers and make them feel a part of now, then I don't think the current system is encouraging this. We should go ahead and keep our word to last year's authors since we only let no time frame last year because we hadn't had on in so long.

Either way is fine with me. I do think most of the folks who have done the nominating are the readers who are currently active on the site, so I'm sure they won't mind having their nominations whittled down to just the fics completed or started since the last awards. I wasn't active on N-S during the last awards show. And, while I greatly appreciated the nominations and votes, I did feel kind of bad because I was pretty sure the awards would have meant more to the writers who were currently active. It could be the same this time around (and I wonder if a lot of the older writers are even aware that they've been nominated). All that to say that I don't think it would cause anyone problems to switch gears at this point and limit the time frame. A few of the categories might be a little slim on options, but most of them should have plenty with the list Mindy put together.
Anyway, either way is fine with me - I appreciate the nominations for both my older and newer fics and I've nominated both older and newer fics, so I could go either way. But if most of the current N-Sers would prefer to limit the timeframe, I'd certainly support them.
Well, I am amongst those who would certainly benefit from slimming down the list so I'm biased. In other words, the decision of whether to keep things as they are or to cut down the nominees should be up to Julie and/or the other members. Maybe it could be put to the vote with a poll?

Every current author will benefit from this, so there really isn't a bias. The whole point is that current authors benefit more than previous authors because all we're doing is re-nominating previous fics that didn't win. It's like nominating Brokeback Mountain repeatedly. Eventually it will win, but it had its chance.
I don't think we need a poll. We either set the precedent now or we don't. A poll will just drag this on. I, obviously, think we should since we said we would last year and pretty much everything is set to go to do it the proper way of judging fics that were updated, completed, or began in 2009 since the last awards. Other awards I've participated in have had a lengthy "is this eligible" period and the list is whiddled down. It's more unfair to not reward current authors than anyone who might've nominated a favorite fic from 2004 that didn't win last year. Let's just do this. It's not that difficult.

I agree, limit the list to current stories, and get this thing done.
This is getting to be too much trouble to be worth whatever fun and satisfaction members might get out of it - at least for me. If you are changing the nominations to reflect new guidelines, it should be a simple matter to knock out all of my nominations so I can happily retire from the whole issue. I asked for the courtesy last time around and was told it wouldn't be fair to those who had been kind enough to nominate me. If we can rework the whole thing midway through nominations, I think the issue of fairness is put to rest. Again, I appreciate those who are trying to show me an honour, but this is too messy to be fun.

Me too, Non. I see I was nominated for a couple things (surprise!) and if it's easier to just scratch them off, then so be it. I didn't post here in 2009 and I doubt I'll finish anything in 2010.
All righty, I've asked Mindy to go through the current list of nominees and to weed out those not on the previously posted list. I'll update the first post of this thread, and send out some more information about the recent changes in format to everyone ASAP.
Thanks for all your honest opinions!
