    Title: Prey of Chloe
    Rating: R to NC-17
    Spoilers: Beginning of Season 4 up to and including “Scare”. A bit of creative license will be taken with Chloe’s mother.

    Setting: After the toxic explosion in “Scare” and revealing the truth about her mother to Clark, Chloe leaves Smallville for a month to parts unknown. She returns a much changed woman and sparks Lex’s interest

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    (It’s aftermath time. Lex baits Chloe. Clark likes Chloe. Lex throws punches. I hope you enjoy the fireworks)
    And he had left her there, standing, walking away without a single glance in her direction. Despite the excitement of what had just taken place between them, Lex felt more frustrated than before. He was angry and needed to get out of the club rather than risk seeing her again with….
    “Lex,” Clark greeted,” I didn’t know you were here.”
    Just what I needed right about now.
    “You can’t hear all the talk about the place and not visit it,” he answered offhandedly, “but I’m very surprised to see you here, Clark. Big date?”
    “I’m here with Chloe and the guys on the team.”
    Why hasn’t he denied that it’s a date?
    “This place is pretty wild,” he commented with fake ignorance, “I’m surprised that either you or Chloe find it of much interest.”
    “Chloe’s changed, Lex. I don’t know what it is, but she fascinates me.”
    And my nightmare prolongs itself.
    “Are you saying you have feelings for her.”
    “Lex, look at her,” Clark said, gesturing to the bar where Chloe was flirting with the bartender as she got a drink. “You’d have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to have feelings for Chloe. She’s hot.”
    “Wasn’t she hot before?”
    I'll feel like hitting you no matter what you answer.
    “It’s different, Lex. She’s confident and sexy. Even when she’s not at a club dressed to kill, she’s sexy and she knows it. I can’t keep my eyes off her.”
    “And is the attraction mutual?”
    “I don’t know if it is and I don’t know if it’ll go beyond attraction. All I can say is that I’m attracted to her and she isn’t indifferent.
    ‘She isn’t indifferent’? What a fucking ringing endorsement!
    Chloe walked up to Lex and Clark, handed Clark a drink and took a long gulp of hers.
    “Dancing really made you thirsty,” Clark said with a laugh.
    “I got really worked up,” she said, glancing over at Lex mysteriously, “but this will help me cool off quickly.”
    “Burning the floor tonight, Chloe?” Lex inquired, quietly stewing his anger.
    “Among other things, “she said, chuckling under her breath.
    “Kent!” called out a voice from one of the side tables, “Get your ass over here!”
    “That’s Griffin,” Clark said, annoyed, “If I don’t go over there, he’ll be here in a second and won’t leave until we leave. I’ll be right back.”
    Chloe put her hand on his shoulder and replied, “I’ll be right here.”
    Lex followed her body language, his eyes betraying the intense levels his anger was reaching. “What exactly do you think you’re doing?”
    “Like I said,” she replied, finishing her soda, “I’m cooling off.”
    “And you need to string Clark around in order to cool down? Honestly, Chloe, don’t you think this is beneath you?”
    “Beneath me?” she repeated disgustedly, ”What gives you the right to judge any of my actions, Lex?”
    “Do I need to remind you of what’s going on between us.”
    “I remember.”
    “I bet you do.”
    “And it gives you exactly nothing. It’s physical. Nothing more, nothing less. No strings.”
    “Is that what you tell yourself?”
    Their eyes locked and Chloe shivered as he watched her possessively. With his eyes, he seemed to strip her defenses by using only a calculated word or two. She felt that now familiar buzz in her head.
    “Lex, what do you want from me?”
    “Just you, Chloe. I want you,” he said, walking behind her and stroking the side of her midriff, until he could feel her skin goose bump. “But I won’t watch you make Clark your puppet.”
    “How would I do that?”
    “He’s watching you. He looks at you differently.”
    Chloe glanced over at the table where Clark and his teammates were talking. As she looked towards them, Clark looked straight at her and smiled.
    “It will come to nothing,” she said flatly, “it’s a reaction to my new appearance and attitude.”
    “I think you’re underestimating him, Chloe. Once you inflame a young man’s lust, it’s hard to superficially put that fire out.”
    “Personal experience, Lex?”
    “Naturally.”
    Chloe began to walk over to the bar again as she laughed, “Jealous again?”
    “Yes,” he said simply. “Don’t play this game, Chloe. It won’t end well.”
    “Are you warning me or threatening me?” They sat side by side, as Lex slipped his hand on her knee.
    “Perhaps a bit of both,” he said.
    “How alpha male of you,” she said, ordering a bottle of water.
    “No, it’s more possessiveness,” he said, moving his hand up to her thigh, “once I see what I want, I despise competition. It brings out my killer instinct.”
    “Color me unimpressed.”
    He whispered into her ear. “I prefer to think of your ‘color’ as it was before, when I made you scream by finger-fucking you.”
    Chloe felt her stomach knot at the remembered image. “And you were the first to walk away,” she said emotionless, “try to remember that.”
    She stood up and walked towards Clark’s table, joining him and the other teammates in their shared conversations. Lex steamed as he watched Clark put his hand on the small of her back.
    ~~~~~

    Clark dropped her home at midnight, much to Gabe’s delight. Chloe smiled as she walked in the door and took off her jacket.

    “I’m glad you and Clark are spending time together again.”

    “Dad, it’s no big deal,” she said, heading towards the kitchen to find a snack.

    “Don’t be so sure,” he advised, “I saw the way he looked at you.”

    “He’s not my type, Dad.”

    “Since when?”

    “We don’t want to go into this, Dad. It’ll only hurt us both.”

    “No, Chloe, I think as your father I’m entitled to hear what my daughter’s ‘type’ is?”

    “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she warned, “but Clark is what I wanted before I knew what I really was. I need a man who’ll melt right through me…….who wants me not because of how outrageous my outward appearance is, but despite how I look…….I want a man who’ll crush me because he thinks I’m constructing false defenses, but will also raise me up to voracious truth……and I want a man who only has to look at me in a certain way and he’s touched me all over.”

    Gabe felt himself blush intensely, “That’s asking for a lot, don’t you think?”

    “Since I’m bound to be disappointed,” she quipped, “I figured I might as well set the bar as high as possible.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Upstairs in her room, Chloe took out the bottle of cognac she had hidden in her closet and poured herself a drink as she put some music on. She felt restless, worked up and awake. Throwing herself on the bed, she lay back and enjoyed the music of Janis Ian.
    I remember mornings
    Waking by your side
    Your scent on my pillow
    Fever in your eyes
    Cast upon the waters
    Shipless, I surrender
    Lead me to your harbor
    Cover me in splendor
    Drown me in delusion and desire
    Ride me like a wave
    Other seas may call you
    Other shores will shine
    Tempt you with their treasures
    Water into wine
    Still the safest harbor will be mine
    Ride me like a wave
    She could still feel his hands sliding over her body. The touch of him grabbing her breasts. The feel of him slipping between her thighs. His fingers pressing inside her. Chloe’s heart raced as she remembered the mark of his kiss on her mouth, crushing her and claiming her.
    That man melts me, even as he lets me burn him. He sees right through and he’s unafraid.
    “Lex,” she said out loud, closing her eyes as she pictured his body on hers, “ride me like a wave.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

    Back in the manor, Lex boxed. He needed to lay to waste the physical anger accumulated over the sight of Chloe that night. As he hit the speed bag with measured and timed punches, he tried to keep his mind off the fact that he missed his chance to bring her home with him.

    If I hadn’t gone on that stupid rant when I talked to Clark, she’d be here now.
    He flexed his arms, matching right uppercut to left jab, as Nick Lowe played in the background.

    The beast in me
    Is caged by frail and fragile bars
    Restless by day
    And by night, rants and rages at the starts
    God help the beast in me

    The beast in me
    Has had to learn to live with pain
    And how to shelter from the rain
    And in the twinkling of an eye
    Might have to be restrained
    God help the beast in me

    “God……damnit!” he exclaimed, his naked chest dripping with sweat as he finished his speedbag warmup and headed towards the heavy bag. He couldn’t get her out of his mind. The scent of her was not washed away by his sweat. She still enveloped him. Lex could picture the mark of the palm of her hand on his cock, pumping his jealous action……..controlling his verbal sedition.

    Sometimes it tries to kid me
    That it's just a teddy bear
    Or even somehow manage
    To vanish in the air
    Then that is when I must beware

    Of the beast in me
    That everybody knows
    They've seen him out dressed in my clothes
    Patently unclear
    If it's New York, or New Year
    God help the beast in me
    The beast in me

    “I’m …….not…….giving……up,” he chanted, banging and hitting the bag with all his strength.

    You’re mine, Chloe. Deny it all you want, but you are.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    (Clark makes a move on Chloe. Lex follows Chloe to California. One couple gets close. Get the tissues out.)
    Chapter 8
    Please allow me to introduce myself
    I'm a man of wealth and taste
    I've been around for a long, long year
    Stole many a man's soul and fate
    On Thursday afternoon, the Torch offices were buzzing with Chloe’s team of apprentice reporters typing and editing to the sounds of the Rolling Stones.
    “People, please,” she called out, “let’s get with the fact checking. Rumsfeld is not the security advisor……he’s Defense Secretary. And who submitted this film review?”
    “That’s me,” called out the new movie intern.
    “You called ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ a tepid remake of an original idea without referencing the fact that ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ was itself a remake.”
    “It was?”
    I’m getting an ulcer.
    “Do your research, please. We don’t have time for this. Issue goes to press tonight and we’re less than half-way done.”
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    What's puzzling you
    Is the nature of my game
    Chloe slumped into her chair, dreading the amount of work that overseeing a staff of mostly junior reporters entailed. Half of them wouldn’t make it to next year, which was fine with her. She’d be out of Smallville High by then and retired from the Torch, thankfully.
    Clark walked up to her desk and lay his story in front of her. Chloe leaned forward and began reading it.
    “Not bad………tight and concise…….’the team, recovering from a season of mostly highs and lows, struck out despite the opposition and battered the ghosts of the field’. Interesting tone for a sports article, Clark.”
    “I thought the ghosts reference would perk you up.”
    “It’s better than the New York Times-esque writing I’ve been editing lately,” she confessed, “Most of my new staff writes with a thesaurus when they should be using a dictionary. It’s nice to fully stretch and expand the language within the parameters of an article, but first find out what the fucking words mean.”
    “You sound tired, Chloe. Why don’t you take a break?”
    “Na, I can’t. I’ve got to get this red marked and submitted today. I’m headed out for the weekend.”
    “Oh? Where to?”
    “I’d rather not talk about it, Clark,” Chloe insisted.
    “When will you be back?” he questioned, dying to know the details.
    “Tuesday at the latest. Don’t worry – I’m not skipping out of town permanently.”
    “I wasn’t thinking that,” he replied.
    “No, but it’s killing you that you don’t know where I’m going,” she guessed. The look on Clark’s face told her she’d hit pay dirt.
    “I’m worried about you, Chloe. Do you want any company?”
    “Clark, thank you,” she said, “but this is something I need to do alone.”
    He put his hand on her shoulder and she met his eyes for an instant. “Call me if you need me,” he said.
    “I will,” she acquiesced.
    ~~~~~

    Gabe wasn’t happy that she was headed to California again, but she’d made a promise. Even if her mother was incoherent, Chloe had vowed to visit her at least once a month and she was planning on keeping her word. As she placed her duffel bag in the trunk of her car, Lex’s car pulled up into the driveway.

    “Going somewhere?” he asked.

    She turned to him and Lex instantly knew something was wrong. Chloe closed the trunk and stood in front of her passenger side as Lex got out of his Porsche.

    “Gabe isn’t here, Lex and I’m on my way out.”

    “Out? You’ve got luggage packed away. I’d say you’re going somewhere.”

    “Give the man a prize. Yes, and Gabe knows all about it. I’m not running away from home.”

    “Where are you going?”

    She stood contemplating him for a moment, and Lex believed she was considering telling him the reason for her trip. But no, that would be too simple. Chloe simply shook her head and walked over to enter her car. Lex stood in her way.

    “Fine,” he said, “don’t tell me.”

    “Lex, please. Not now-“

    “Chloe,” he pleaded, ”I swear, I don’t care if you tell me or not. Just tell me you’re alright.”

    “No,” she said honestly, ”I’m pretty fucking far from alright, to tell you the truth, but I need to go anyway.”

    She looked so forlorn and broken as she spoke, that Lex could not resist the urge to touch her. Placing his hand softly on her cheek, he rubbed her skin and uttered, “I understand.”

    “But you don’t even know?”

    “That doesn’t matter. I still understand.”

    Chloe couldn’t take her eyes off him and briefly lay her hand upon his. “Yes,” she replied, “I believe that you do.”

    Both leaned forward at exactly the same moment and they kissed softly. Chloe touched his face and shook her head sadly. So many unspoken and feared words hid in her expression, but Lex wouldn’t make a move to force from her what she refused to give voluntarily. He had to show her trust and respect the distance she’d drawn.

    “Come back soon,” he pleaded.

    She smiled, but was unable to keep a solitary tear from falling down her cheek, which Lex wiped away with his finger. “I will, “she said, kissing him on the cheek.

    Lex watched silently as she got into her car and sped away.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Oh, mirror in the sky
    -what is love?
    -can the child within my heart rise above?
    -can i sail thru the changin' ocean tides?
    -can i handle the seasons of my life?
    Robotically, she drove to the Metropolis train station. Her mind and heart were waging a battle on her senses that was ripping her apart. Every instinct told her she could trust Lex, but still something held her back. Was it stubborn pride or some newly born protective urge?
    I can’t let him see what being with her does to me. No one should see that.
    SAN DIEGO
    Milford Institute
    “Ms. Sullivan, I just need to warn you once again. Your mother’s reactions are volatile and unpredictable,” Dr. Benton warned.
    “I realize that, Doctor, but I just need to see her. Even if it’s from a short distance, I need to make sure she’s OK.”
    “She’s under the best care, around the clock,” the doctor assured her.
    “No offense, Doc, but she would she know if she didn’t?” Chloe fired back, “I’m sorry. That was uncalled for. I promised her last time that I’d come visit.”
    “As you’ve said, she won’t be aware of her surroundings.”
    “I know that, but I’m willing to run the risk again.”
    She was once again escorted to that medicinally scented, white room. Bare walls and only one window, this had been her mother’s home for the better part of the last five years. Trembling, she turned the door knob and was followed in by her mother’s nurse.
    “Looks like you’ve got a visitor, Mrs. Sullivan.”
    Crouched on her bed, her mother chanted to herself, swaying back and forth like a pendulum. Chloe strayed to the far edge of the room and observed her.
    “She’s a beautiful girl,” the nurse continued, dropping a fresh woolen blanket on the corner of the bed. “What a beautiful daughter you have.”
    “Don’t…….don’t have one…….had and lost………she was taken……they took her…….they take everything………hate them…….hate them.”
    “Don’t worry, dear,” the nurse said, gesturing for Chloe to come nearer, “let her see you again.”
    Chloe hesitated, taking very small steps as she replayed what had happened the last time her mother had seen her.”
    “It’s me, “ she said quietly, ”don’t worry……I won’t touch you. I just wanted to say hello.”
    Absently, her mother looked up and through her. She continued to sway, barely registering Chloe’s presence.
    My face…….my face and my eyes, only older and they are repelled by me.
    Chloe bit her lower lip to keep from crying out in pain and anger. “Mom,” she whimpered, “don’t you know me.”
    “………hate them…..took her……….took her far…….hate them.”
    “Mom, please,” she uttered breathlessly. “Don’t you know me?”
    “NOT A MOM!” her mother started to yell incessantly, “LOST! LOST! THEY TOOK…..THEY TOOK!”
    Chloe summoned all her strength and started to back out of the room. “I’m sorry, Mom. I shouldn’t have spoken. I won’t do it again.”
    “NOT MOM! NOT MINE!”
    It was more than she could take. Chloe left the room and the hospital in tears.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Lex hadn’t heard from Chloe in two days and he was growing more frantic with every passing hour.

    I shouldn’t have let her go alone. I should have insisted on going with her.

    As if in answer to his desperate plea, his phone began to ring in his pocket. He picked up instantly.

    “Lex?”

    “Chloe, thank God. I’ve been so worried.”

    “She hates me……..she started yelling….screaming….throwing things until I left the room. What did I do? What is it about me that she hates?”

    She was falling apart on her end. Lex tried to keep calm as best he could.

    “Your mother,” he said, “You went to see your mother. How stupid of me – I should have guessed.”

    “I didn’t want anyone to know, “she cried.

    “Where are you?”

    “Las Colinas. At the Sheraton.”

    “Don’t go anywhere.”

    ~~~~~~~~~`
    Hours later, she was still laying on her hotel room floor, mindlessly playing the same Leonard Cohen tune over and over.
    Your faith was strong but you needed proof
    You saw her bathing on the roof
    Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
    She tied you
    To a kitchen chair
    She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
    And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
    She wasn’t asleep; she wasn’t awake. Chloe wasn’t even quite sure she was even alive at this point. She felt so displaced and numb by the rejection she felt. Her mother was peaceful and obedient with everyone else she interacted with, Dr. Benton had told her. It was only Chloe that got a violent reaction from her
    Lucky me. I bring her to life out of pure spite and anger.
    Chloe heard a knock on her door and shakily, got up to answer it. Turning the knob she saw Lex on the other side and fell to ground in tears.
    “Lex, I can’t – I can’t blame her. She’s sick and she hates me. She will always hate me. My own face hates me. What did I do? What can I do?”
    Lex closed the door behind him and hugged her to him, cradling her on his shoulder. He said nothing, but offered her the support she wanted when she’d chosen to call him earlier. He let her vent her fury and her regret; her sadness and her acceptance.
    I did my best, it wasn't much
    I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
    I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
    And even though
    It all went wrong
    I'll stand before the Lord of Song
    With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
