Dinner Party -
I stare at the people around me, bored out of my head. I hate this---hate the fact that I have to surround myself with falseness and untruths---in order to survive in the big world of business---or at least at this level.
I would rather be somewhere else, with somebody wrapped around my body and soul---in bed preferably but it wouldn't matter. Just to have her near me---to save me from myself and this party, is all I need.
I hear a gasp from someone nearby and I look towards the door. There she is.
Her gown is royal purple, a jeweled tone, fit for a queen. It is strapless and the full skirt swishes as she walks into the room, nodding at the people as she goes by.
All the women are jealous----all the men, envious of me at the moment. She gives me a smirk, knowing how she is affecting people and loving it.
For so many years she lived in the shadow of a certain brunette. Oh, Lana didn't mean to do this to her---it was like she was affected by the meteors and guys fell at her feet. She thought I had fallen for Lana too but the night we first made love, I told her differently.
She made me go to Lana and Clark and tell them the truth---I did it willingly, thinking, she's the one with the power over me, maybe she was a meteor freak. She laughed at my words when I told her that---saying that the only power she had over me was love.
She stands before me now---her smirk turning into a smile.
"I win the bet---pay up!"
I smirk at her now and then smile, leaning into her ear and whispering, "Sure you don't want to go upstairs instead?"
I feel her shiver and grin. I have the power of love over her too. Then I back away and she leans up, kissing me softly on the cheek and then leaning towards my ear.
"Do this and I'll be yours forever."
I gasp at the words and watch her back away. Oh, right now, the only thing I want to do is make love to her, in front of all these people. But instead:
"All right, I'll do it. After all, I pay my debts and---"
"And?"
I don't answer her. Instead:
"Well, I may as well get it over and done with humiliating myself."
She gives me a soft smile. "You have a great voice, Lex."
"Right---that's why I'm a singer, not a business man."
She leans back up. "You do this and I'll do anything your heart desires tonight," she softly growls.
She backs away. "Anything?" I growl back.
"Short of doing something evil, yes."
I chuckle at that and lead her to the piano. All watch as we sit on the bench and I start to play and sing:
"She may be the face I can't forget
The trace of pleasure or regret
Maybe my treasure or the prize I have to pay
She may be the song that summer sings
Maybe the children autumn brings
Maybe a hundred different things
Within the measure of a day
She may be the beauty or the beast

She may not be what she may seem
Inside her shell....
She, who always seems so happy in a crowd
Whose eyes can be so private and so proud
No one's allowed to see them when they cry
She maybe the love that cannot hope to last

That I remember 'till the day I die
She maybe the reason I survive
The why and wherefore kind of life
The one I care for through the rough and ready years

As I fade out, I hear a sigh from her and look at her.
"I love you, Chloe."
"I know---you just proved it. I know how private your singing prowess is and how vulnerable you feel when you do it----I love you too, Lex."
"Good, because I would hate that third the charm in marriage didn't work."
She slaps my arm and we are lost once again in a sweet kiss, not caring if they clapped or not---or that anybody else is in the room. For she is the meaning to my life, as much as the he in me is to her.
