TITLE: Boys Will Be Boys
AUTHOR: ~Kat~
E-MAIL: gemkat5@yahoo.com
DISCLAIMER: The only thing I claim to own is the insane idea that formed this story! Everything else is borrowed!
SPOILERS: Anything from seasons 1 & 2!
RATING: PG-13/NC-17 (1 chapter gets gritty)
PAIRING: Chlex, Clana, and poor lone wolf Pete

SUMMARY: Pete has a sense of humor. Clark is Pete's friend. Ergo... practical jokes happen when they put their heads together! The girls get sick of it and seek revenge (with a little help from Lex of course)... that turns deadly. This is AU, Humor/Suspense/Halloween--so I put it here in 'General' if that's wrong-please let me know and I'll repost appropriately.

A/N: The preface for the first part is that Pete, Clark, and Chloe got into hot water with Miss Sheriff while trying to help someone in trouble. As punishment, she made them serve Community Service by cleaning up 'Bug Boy's' house so it can go on the market. (I couldn't get my Muse to write out that story line no matter how hard I tried, so I gave up.)

*Special Note* The first chapter has 'very mild' Chlex interaction. Bear with me; I make up for it eventually! WARNING!!!--- For Those Who Must Know--- Chloe and Lana are friends in this one... so you can't say I didn't warn you... but read it anyway! Give me Lana bashing, I don't care, so long as you read the thing! I hope you all enjoy!!!!

Boys Will Be Boys I

Lex pulled up to the curb just as Pete and Clark came crashing out of the house laughing. Clearing the porch steps in a single bound, they hit the overgrown lawn and doubled over in hysterics, giving each other a high five.

They both turned their heads at hearing Lex close his car door.

"Aw, man. He's going to ruin it!" Pete complained, as he they watched him casually walk toward them. "Clark, ask him not to do anything," Pete whispered.

"Hi, Clark, Mr. Ross," Lex greeted looking at them curiously.

"Hey, Lex," Clark replied, slightly uncomfortable. "What brings you out here?"

"I've been volunteered by our lovely sheriff to supervise the community service group," he replied cynically. "Is everything ok?" he asked, noting how nervous they both were acting.

"Yeah, everything's fine," Clark answered innocently while Pete secretly jabbed him in the ribs, urging him to ask Lex not to interfere.

"I thought Miss Sullivan was supposed to be here with you?" Lex inquired.

"Oh, she is. She's in the house," Clark answered, gesturing back over his shoulder.

"She should be coming out in about..." Pete added, checking his watch. "Thirty seconds." Then he looked pointedly at Clark. "Hurry up and ask him!" he urged between clenched teeth without moving his lips, before giving Lex an exaggerated innocent smile.

"Right, Uhm...Lex?" Clark started. "Could I ask you not to go into the house just yet? No matter what you hear."

Lex looked at them curiously and opened his mouth to ask why when a shrieking, toe curdling feminine scream was heard from the higher levels inside the house.

Clark and Pete gave each other conspiratory glances before turning their eyes back toward Lex, neither of them able to hide their smirks of amusement, though not for lack of trying. Clark chuckled and smiled guiltily at Lex.

"It's a fruit bat," Clark explained, shrugging his shoulders innocently.

More screaming was heard, along with the resounding crash of splintering wood, breaking glass, and finally a slamming door.

"And a 'little' one at that!" Pete added, ignoring the noises behind him while holding his hands close together to emphasis the size of the creature. "We wouldn't do anything to hurt her!"

"No!" Clark affirmed with wide eyes. "We just wanted to scare her a little, that's all." He added, a sly grin reappearing on his face.

"We consider it retribution for all the times she dragged us with her on her investigations," Pete voiced.

"You don't have to explain to me," Lex said starting to chuckle despite himself. "Though, Clark," he added with feigned sternness. "I'm surprised you would do something like this to one of your friends."

"Shit!" Pete exclaimed suddenly in a stage whisper. "Here she comes!"

"Hide!" both boys yelled, and took off running in opposite directions around the sides of the house, leaving Lex standing by himself.

They were barely out of sight when Chloe came out of the house almost at a full run. She jumped over the porch steps in the same manner the boys had before her, landing on both feet, dropping to one knee, and hitting the dirt with her hands before sprinting forward all in one fluid motion.

"Lex!" she screamed in relief at seeing him. She grabbed the sleeve of his coat and skidded to a halt, hiding behind him. "You have to kill it! I'll do anything! Just go get it!"

"Chloe," Lex voiced calmly while she grabbed at his coat, trying to push him toward the house.

"Anything!" She repeated, and peeked around his elbow to look up at him. "Do you 'know' what I'm saying?!" She shoved at him with both hands on his back, making him move half a step from the simple force of her efforts before she peeked at him again. "I'll wash your car! I'll wash all your cars! But you 'have' to find 'that thing' before it..."

Suddenly something hit the inside of the screen door of the house causing it to open a couple of inches before closing again. Chloe froze, her eyes growing wide at seeing something flying around on the other side of the screen. She let out another ear shattering scream before turning tail and running for Lex's car.

Slamming the car door shut she locked it before half jumping over the gearshift to frantically roll up the window on the driver's side, locking that door as well. Seating herself on the passenger side she closed her eyes and focused on breathing. 'Thank god he didn't have the convertible!'

After watching Chloe lock herself in his car, Lex turned and walked into the house. Stopping just inside the door he bent down and picked up a crumpled brown lunch bag with a string tied around it. He stood up with an exasperated sigh. He was going to call out to the boys, knowing they weren't far away, and then looked thoughtfully outside towards his car. With an amused smirk, he left the house.

Using his key to get in his car Lex slid behind the wheel and closed the door, locking it just to make Chloe feel better. Her eyes still had a wildness about them when she looked at him.

"Chloe..."

"I'm 'not' going back in there," she stressed with finality.

He tossed the crumpled bag with the string onto her lap. "Where are Clark and Pete?" he asked, sounding legitimately curious. "Aren't they supposed to be here with you?"

She stared at the brown bag for half a minute before her eyes hardened with realization. "I'll kill them!" she gritted between clenched teeth, grabbing the bag from her lap in a fist. "Ooh, they are 'so' going to pay for this!" she seethed, unlocking the door to get out of the car. Turning around, she bent down to look back at Lex. "I'm 'still' not going back in there!" she reaffirmed and closed the car door.

Lex watched her get in her own car with an amused smirk. 'I had a feeling that would be your reaction, Chloe,' Lex thought as he drove off in the opposite direction. 'This should prove to be very interesting.'

Stepping behind the counter, Lana tossed the damp rag toward the sink, watching tiredly as it completely missed her target to fall to the floor. With a heavy sigh, she bent over to it pick up, wiping at a dirty spot on the tiles while she was stooped down.

Hearing a noise at the door, she quickly darted up to look around warily. After letting out her held breath, she chuckled lightly to herself, shaking her head for being paranoid, and tossed the rag into the sink.

Walking around the counter, she decided to check the doors even though she had locked them herself. Plus, she was expecting Clark and Pete to show up soon to help her move things from the storage room. It was always flooding and the Talon was losing money on wasted supplies. At her request, Lex arranged for a contractor to come in to refinish the entire room.

She frowned when she reached the doors and found one of them unlocked, taking a wary glance around the coffeehouse, swearing she had heard a faint noise behind her.

"Clark? Pete?" she called nervously.

With her hand on the unlocked door, she stood still, listening for the slightest sound. After a minute of not hearing anything she again shook her head and chuckled at herself for being paranoid. "You're losing it, Lana," she joked with herself, figuring she hadn't locked the door after all.

Just as her hand touched the bolt to lock it, the door opened with a rush from the other side, causing Lana to cry out and jump back in surprise.

"Lana, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," Lex apologized from the open doorway.

"It's ok," she assured him, placing her hand at her chest with relief. "I guess I'm just being a little jumpy tonight."

"Did something happen?" he asked with concern.

He was impressed at how dedicated Lana was with the karate classes he had set up for her, and though she had proven that she could take care of herself, she was still a little cautious at being in the Talon at closing time.

"No, everything is fine," she replied, finally giving him a smile, her shoulders relaxing noticeably.

"Where's Clark?" he asked, searching the room behind her with his eyes.

"He's not here yet," she stated, sounding slightly irritated. "He and Pete are supposed to come over to help clear out the storage room for the contractor to work tomorrow."

Lex bowed his head boyishly, chuckling to himself with a full smile on his face.

"What?" she asked, a smile forming on her own lips in response to his rare one.

He looked at her knowingly, still holding a grin, and backed up a couple steps to open the door at his back. There, outside at the curb, was Clark's truck.

Lana expelled a sharp breath of disbelief at seeing the truck, and then turned her eyes to Lex. "So, I 'did' hear something, didn't I?" she asked rhetorically before her expression changed to incredulous. "I don't believe those two!"

Just then a noise was heard from the back room of the coffeehouse, a definite tell tale sign that 'someone' was in the shop.

"Lex?" she asked, taking off her apron and tossing it over the nearest upturned chair. "I'm done here, would you mind driving me home?"

"It would be my pleasure," he replied, continuing to hold the door for her as she slipped past him. Closing the door behind her, Lex locked it and turned to escort the young lady to his car.

"Chloe," Lana voiced with mild surprise at seeing her friend sitting in Lex's car.

"Hey," she replied in greeting, getting out so Lana could get in the back of the Ferrari. "My car broke down and Lex was giving me a ride home," she explained before asking, "Guess there was no coffee to be had, huh?"

"Uhm..." Lana stammered from the back seat, looking at Lex guiltily as he got in behind the wheel. She hadn't even asked him why he stopped by the Talon so late. "I'm sorry, I got distracted by two of our favorite guys," she said dryly.

"Oh?" Chloe chimed with interest, getting back in the front seat. "What are they up to this time?" she asked with cynicism.

'Those boys are doomed if these two team up for revenge.' Lex smirked to himself as he pulled away from the curb, listening as Lana heatedly explained to Chloe exactly what their male friends were up to just before he had arrived.

Boys Will Be Boys II

Chloe pulled her light jacket tight around herself as she hustled from her car to the front door of the mansion. Letting herself in, she paused inside the foyer to shake off the chill from outside. She was heading in this direction to investigate a story and Lana had asked her to drop off the Talon's weekly report to Lex along her way. Chloe agreed with a secret smile.

For the past few weeks, she and Lex had been exchanging sly grins and coy glances with each other. At first, Chloe thought it was her imagination, but lately it seemed he looked at her slightly differently, just slightly, and Chloe found that she liked the mild exchange very much.

"Miss Sullivan," his voice echoed in the hall. "Is that a new dance step or did it get colder outside?" he asked with a grin, approaching from the stairs.

She couldn't help but smile at the mischievous gleam in his eyes at his own humor. "Wow, Lex Luthor has a sense of humor, that's chilling in itself," she teased with her own grin.

Lex laughed good naturedly as he opened the doors to his office. "You should hear me when I really get started, I'm a regular comedian," he smirked before walking into the next room. "But seriously," he called back over his shoulder. "What brings you to the castle on this dismal cold evening?"

She followed behind him, feeling the warmth in the room as she entered. She dropped her shoulder bag out of the way on the floor, and headed toward the fireplace. "You know, Lex," she said coyly, ignoring his question for the moment. "Halloween is coming up. You could do something really awesome with this place."

He casually walked over to stand behind her, making sure he kept his hands in his pockets. "Like walking around in sheets?" he joked, his tone suggestive.

She looked over her shoulder at him, catching his innuendo, but not sure if he was being serious or not. She laughed nervously before replying, "No," she dragged out, and ducked past him to put some space between them. "Like turning this place into a haunted castle!" she stated passionately, with her arms outstretched as she did a semi circle in the middle of the room. "Think about it, Lex, you could give your staff a couple weeks off and I'm sure this place would fill up with cobwebs and dust in no time!"

He chuckled as he walked toward her. "I don't think my humor extends that far."

"Come on, Lex, you're sitting on a gold mine here! You could section off an area and have a haunted house tour! You could put strobe lights in the hallways and black lights in the rooms! Oh, and hire some people to act like zombies and psychos, and..."

"Chloe," he laughed, reaching out to place his hands at her waist. "I don't favor the idea of hoards of people screaming and running around in my home," he said looking down at her. "Especially in the dark," he added in a deeper tone, gently pulling her closer when she didn't pull away from him.

She stared up at him with her hands resting lamely on his at her hips. She knew she should move away from him, but knowing it and wanting it were two different things. She chuckled weakly at him, not being able to keep her eyes from fixating on his lips.

"Something amuses you?" he asked, pulling her closer against him, their bodies now meeting in full contact.

"I'm waiting for the inevitable," she chuckled, trying to sound casual. "I mean, Clark is bound to walk through the door any minute, or the cell phone will start ringing, or..."

"Or my lips will meet yours and you decide if you want more or not," he suggested, leaning down to brush his lips against hers fleetingly.

She took a shuddering breath from the brief contact, his lips lingered just a hair's width from hers, waiting for her decision. She leaned into him, kissing his lips more soundly than he had hers. He claimed her mouth in an instant, her body pressing against his as her arms snaked around his neck. Their tongues caressed, exploring each other's mouths as their kiss deepened.

"Lex, I gave the wrong re... port....," Lana stammered in disbelief, barging into the office and seeing them embraced passionately.

Chloe tried to jump back from him guiltily, turning her head with downcast eyes. But he held her firm, waiting for her to meet his gaze. She looked up at him when he didn't release her to find him silently imploring her not to be embarrassed, ashamed, at being caught with him.

"See?" she smiled up at him brightly. "I told you the inevitable would happen!"

His expression relaxed as he let her go, her smile assured him that her embarrassment wasn't personal, but simply getting caught in general.

"I am 'so' sorry," Lana pleaded with embarrassment. "I... I had no idea... that... that...the two of you..."

"This is the correct report then?" Lex asked casually, walking over to her to take the folder from his flustered partner.

"Lex, think about what I said," Chloe stated from the doorway, picking up her shoulder bag. "It's a gold mine of an idea," she hinted and winked at him.

Their eyes met briefly, both of them sporting a sly grin as Chloe headed for the door. "Lana, should I assume Clark is waiting for you or do you need a ride home?"

"Uhm, no, Clark is waiting outside," she replied, still trying to get over her shock.

"I'll see you at home then," she chirped cheerfully, and gave Lex one last knowing grin before leaving.

"How long have the two of you been seeing each other?" she asked Lex, watching him as he lithely sat behind his desk.

"Chloe still has the other report, by the way, in case you need it for your files," he replied with a grin.

"You're not going to tell me," she stated unnecessarily. "OK. That's fine," she reasoned with herself aloud. "I just thought we had a friendship as well as a partnership, but I can see that isn't the case," she said coyly, trying to lure him into telling her more information.

Lex chuckled heartily at her effort and leaned back comfortably in his chair. "Good night, Lana," he laughed.

She looked back at him and smiled softly. "Good night, Lex," she conceded graciously and turned to leave.

"That's it!" Chloe yelled with exasperation, barging into the room. "I've had it!"

"What happened?" Lex and Lana asked simultaneously, Lex rising from his chair.

"Clark! 'That's' what happened! I am 'so' sick of his practical jokes!" she ranted, pacing around the room in her agitation.

"What did he do?" Lana asked curiously.

Chloe stopped short and turned to look at them both. "I was backing my car up to leave, and... I don't know 'how' he did it... but all of a sudden he was standing behind my car! I hit the brakes, but he fell to the ground. Thinking I hit him, I jumped out only to find him lying on the ground and laughing his ass off!"

"I think Clark and Pete are getting too carried away with these jokes of theirs," Lana stated. "They've been tormenting me all week at the Talon."

"Oooh! I am so mad; I just want to... to...'hit' him!" Chloe exclaimed through clenched teeth.

"Where is our prankster anyway?" Lana asked.

"In the truck, I guess," Chloe replied in a dour tone. "I locked the front door when I came back in so he couldn't follow me. We 'have' to think of something, Lana; this is gone on long enough!"

"You're right, but what can we do? We've already told them we didn't like their jokes."

"Sounds like you ladies need to fight fire with fire," Lex suggested, reseating himself behind the desk.

"Don't you think I've tried?" Chloe replied incredulously. "The trouble is; they're too smart for their own good. My little attempts backfired before they even got off the ground."

Lex met Chloe's gaze with knowing eyes and a devilish grin.

"We don't want to hurt them, Lex, just to teach them a lesson," Lana said in response to the look on his face.

"Paranoid, much, Lana?" Chloe quipped, suddenly feeling defensive on Lex's behalf. She walked to his desk and leaned on the glass on her forearms across from him. "So what's your idea?" she asked with rapt interest.

~

"Oh, wow!" Lana exclaimed with awe as she entered the mansion with Chloe. "I can't believe how eerie it looks in here."

Dark curtains had been placed over all the windows. Candles filled the halls and rooms as the only source of light, fireplaces were burning bright in the rooms Lex had opened for the girl's disposal. The usually shiny polished hardwood was covered with dust in certain areas, cobwebs hung from corners and far recesses throughout the mansion.

"I know, isn't this great?!" Chloe responded excitedly. "I can't believe he actually agreed to this!"

"I think he has an ulterior motive than just helping us get back at Clark and Pete," Lana said with a hint of suggestion.

She gave Lana a sly grin as she walked past her friend to lead the way down the hall. It was driving Lana crazy that neither Lex nor Chloe would tell her anything about what lead up to the kiss she had caught them in the week before.

"Lex!" Chloe called loudly, pausing to look back at Lana at how her voice echoed. "That was weird. I don't remember there being an echo like that before."

"Neither do I," she replied warily, stepping closer to Chloe with sudden unease.

"Hey, you're not backing out now, are you?" Chloe asked her. "Lex went to a lot of trouble to set this up. Not to mention how hard is was for both of us to convince them they weren't allowed to come tonight."

"No way!" Lana exclaimed with renewed bravado. "I'm with you one hundred percent!" The girls shared a smile and turned to move along the hallway. "Just don't call out like that again, ok?"

"How else will I find you?" Lex asked, suddenly behind them. They both jumped with a start and spun around.

"I swear to god, Lex, you need a bell!" Chloe exclaimed with feigned annoyance. "How the hell do you do that?"

"Practice," he grinned at them. "Did you bring the movies?"

"Need you ask?" Chloe asked rhetorically, and unzipped her shoulder bag. "We brought every horror movie we own on DVD."

"I thought you were staying one night?" Lex laughed, taking the several DVD's Chloe handed to him. "You would need a full weekend to watch all of these," he surmised, glancing in the bag to see more movies.

"We couldn't decide which ones to bring, so we brought them all," Lana explained. "Which one is your favorite?"

"My favorite what?" Lex asked, looking at the covers of the movies in his hands.

"Your favorite horror movie, silly," Chloe said.

"Oh," he voiced, handing the movies back to Chloe. "I don't watch horror movies. I don't understand the fear factor, so they're pointless to me," he explained at seeing the incredulous, unbelieving expressions on both their faces.

"Oh, you are 'so' on the couch with us tonight!" Chloe stated. "By the time we're done with you, you will never walk through this castle without a flashlight again!"

"That's all right," he chuckled. "I'll just make myself scarce while you enjoy yourselves."

"Speaking of enjoying ourselves, did you hear from Clark?" Lana asked with tongue in cheek.

"Yes, it seems you both know those boys very well."

"And?" Chloe prompted. "Can we expect our uninvited friends to crash our movie night?" she asked hopefully.

"You can bet money on it," he grinned as he led them to a room he had set up for them to use, complete with a big screen TV with stereo sound, and a DVD player.

~

"Explain to me again why they're running around getting themselves killed," Lex stated in the middle of the movie.

"Because they're trying to find their other friends," Lana whispered.

"But, they're already dead."

"They don't know that. Now, shh!" Chloe whispered at him.

"If they know people die at this camp, then why'd they go there in the first place?"

"Because they thought it was just an urban legend," Chloe replied.

"You really aren't 'getting' this, are you?" Lana asked.

"Not at all. I think I'll go check on the hired help I have scattered throughout the mansion," he stated as he stood up, handing Chloe the bowl of popcorn.

"How many did you hire?" Chloe asked.

"Seven. They were individually instructed where they were allowed to roam, everything else is locked and off limits. Don't scare yourselves too much while I'm gone.” He grinned at her, bending down to momentarily take her lips in his, sucking on them slowly before pulling back. "I'll return shortly."

They both watched Lex leave the room, the movie temporarily forgotten.

"I still can't believe you didn't tell me about you and Lex," Lana accused lightly.

"There's nothing to tell," she shrugged.

"How can you say that? He kisses you like he means it, Chloe."

"Or... he just likes the taste of butter," she joked with a broad smile. "He's been licking my fingers throughout the movie, but I guess you didn't notice that."

"No, I didn't notice that," she laughed. "You have feelings for him, don't you," she stated seriously.

"Do you want to put a different movie in?" Chloe asked, jumping to her feet to get the stack of DVD's. She didn't want to talk about her feelings for Lex, especially with Lana.

"Sure," Lana complied; knowing Chloe used the distraction as a way to change the subject.

~

Lex returned a short while later to find the ladies sitting close together, their eyes unblinkingly glued to the TV screen. Their shoulders were tensed, their backs rigid, as they leaned forward, watching as the movie character opened a door to find... big surprise... a dead friend in a bloody mess.

He silently hung back in the shadows of the room and watched their individual reactions to the scene. Lana had jumped and covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide and fearful at what she was watching. Chloe had also jumped, but then settled down to watch more with a look of disgust on her face, putting more popcorn into her mouth.

"Oh, now 'why' is she still going to go into that room?" Chloe asked rhetorically. "He's obviously dead, and you 'know' the killer is still in there!"

"Would you just leave if that was Clark or Pete?" Lana asked. "I wouldn't be able to. I would have to see for myself, I would have to get closer... just to make sure."

"Yeah, you're right," Chloe conceded. "I think I would rather die than walk out of that room after seeing my friend bludgeoned to death like that. And if he wasn't dead, I would kill him for scaring me to death!"

Lana chuckled despite the mood in the room. "I wonder where they are, anyway. They should have been here by now."

"Maybe Lex snuck up on them when they were trying to sneak in and scared the shit out of them," Chloe laughed.

"I 'hate' how he does that," Lana admitted, though she laughed at Chloe's humor. "I can't tell you how many times I've turned around and... there he was!" Lana said, expressing her words with her hands.

"It is 'his' home, Lana."

"He does it at the Talon too," she added, sounding disgruntled. "I swear, sometimes I think he does it on purpose. Then he covers it up with an apologetic smile and sincere blue eyes. How can you be mad at him when he looks at you like that? It's just really unnerving sometimes."

"Oh, trust me, I know exactly what you mean about his eyes and smiles," Chloe said agreeably. "And it is definitely unnerving. I don't know how many times I've almost walked into him because he wasn't there a second ago! And I wouldn't doubt for one minute that he does it on purpose." Shrugging she added, "But that's just how he is, it's kind of part of his charm." They were both quiet for a moment, distracted as another victim in the film was set up for another death scene.

"Would you 'have' to go into the room if it was Lex laying there with blood all over him?" Chloe asked quietly. Lana snapped her head with surprise to look directly at Chloe. They shared a knowing glance before each returned her eyes back to the screen. "Me too," Chloe voiced. "Ironic how he snuck into our hearts, isn't it?"

"As a friend, yes it is," Lana nodded in agreement.

"As more than that," Chloe whispered, admitting for the first time that she had feelings for the man in question.

Lex only intended to watch them for a moment, then do exactly what they accused him of being so good at, sneak up behind them to announce his presence. He never would have expected to learn so much from them while eavesdropping in his own house. Surely they realized the possibility that he might be close by? Apparently not, as he listened to them converse.

He shifted his weight to join them when shadowed movement from the hall caught his attention. Slipping back into the shadows of the dimly lit room, he waited with a birds eye view for the scene before him to unfold.

WOW!!!! I love all the feedback  thanks!!! I'm so glad you're enjoying this... and now on to the story.

Boys Will Be Boys III

"Are you 'sure' Luthor said this was ok?" Pete asked for the fifth time, as they tried to jimmy open a lower level window.

"Well, he didn't say it out right, but he knows we're coming here tonight. So, yeah, it's ok."

"Well, if it's ok, then why couldn't he leave the door open? I have a really bad feeling about this, Clark!"

"Pete, trust me, it's fine. He even told me which room he set up for them to watch the movies in. He wouldn't have done that if he didn't want us to crash in on them."

"Whoa," Pete exclaimed, placing his hand on Clark's elbow. "Are you saying that Luthor has a sense of humor? Because that's not just unbelievable, but it’s not funny either!"

Clark laughed at his friend. "Come on, I got the window open, let’s go."

~

"Did you hear that?" Chloe whispered to Lana.

"Yeah," she answered in the same tone. "About time they got here."

"I was getting tired of waiting for them." Lana smiled at her friend’s impatience.

"Ready?" Chloe asked with a gleam in her eyes.

Lana nodded and they both rose from the sofa to head for the kitchen, which was conveniently across the hall.

Lex had given the girls a brief tour of the mansion when they first arrived earlier in the evening, then allowed them to roam freely to familiarize themselves with the hallways and stairs, and which rooms had more than one entrance. Watching them conspire together with devious glints in their eyes was fascinating as far as Lex was concerned. He was intrigued at the ideas that they came up with, only proving his personal theory that they would definitely be something to contend with if pushed too far and teamed up together.

"They're leaving," Clark whispered, using his x-ray vision to look through the wall, then chuckled low to himself.

"What?! Where are they going?" Pete whispered back.

Clark followed the girls with his vision. "Looks like the kitchen," he whispered, then added with amusement, "And Lex is in the room they just left. I have a feeling they didn't know he was in there with them."

"I thought he told you he was going to make himself scarce!"

"Well, he is being scarce if they didn't know he was in there."

"I think we should forget it and bug out," Pete whispered. "I'm telling you, I have a real bad feeling about this. I wouldn't put it past Luthor to help Chloe and Lana get back at us for all the pranks we've pulled on them."

"Aw come on, Pete, you're just being paranoid. Chloe and Lana wouldn't do that, that's what makes joking with them so much fun."

"Oh, you think? Maybe I should remind you about the glue Chloe put on your report, or when Lana put salt in the coffee instead of sugar!"

"Chloe said she dropped the bottle on the desk and apologized for that, she even offered to retype the whole thing for me. And Lana was 'really' busy that night, she almost cried when I told her about it, worrying that she might have done it to customers who wouldn't go back to the Talon anymore."

"And you believed them?!" Pete exclaimed in a hushed voice. "Man, Clark, sometimes your too trusting for your own good."

Clark chuckled. "Sometimes you're too paranoid to be trusting." He used his vision to check on the girls in the kitchen. "Do you think we should tell Lex we're here? I mean, he does own a gun."

Pete looked over at Clark with deadly seriousness. "You picked a good time to remind me about that one, Clark, thanks!"

"Don't worry, I only use it on people I don't like," Lex stated in a low voice from behind them.

Clark jumped and turned around at hearing the voice behind them while Pete spun around and slammed himself back against the wall, his face contorted with momentary fearful surprise at being startled.

"God damn!" Pete exclaimed, relaxing a little at seeing Lex unarmed. "How did you..." he started, then caught himself and glanced at Clark. How would they explain knowing Lex had just been hiding in the darkened room on the other side of the wall?

"The two of you haven't exactly been quiet," Lex filled in, assuming Pete's question was leading to how he knew they were there. "Lucky for you the ladies are in the kitchen making more popcorn."

"Yeah, lucky us," Pete breathed, relieved that Lex made his own assumption to his unfinished question. Rolling his shoulders, he stepped away from the wall, pulling himself together. "So, you're really ok with us being here?"

"Why wouldn't I be?" Lex asked pointedly before relaxing his stance slightly in an attempt to ease the building tension between them. "Clark informed me of your intentions," he added, then shrugged casually, "Just don't break anything."

"What's with the haunted theme?" Clark asked, glancing around for the first time since they entered the mansion.

"It was Chloe's idea," he replied with an amused look in his eyes, glancing up at the ceiling at the hanging cobwebs. "I think it gives the place some personality, don't you?" he grinned and moved to walk past them to head for the kitchen. "I'll expect to hear them screaming in a few minutes," he chuckled as he walked away.

Pete sarcastically mouthed Lex's last comment behind his back, bobbing his head facetiously. "Personality," he grumbled under his breath when Lex was out of earshot. "What would he know about personality? And since when does he call Chloe by her first name?"

"I don't know," Clark responded with a shrug, trying not to laugh at Pete's antics behind Lex's back. "But we should get out of the hallway before the girls come back."

~

"I thought the purpose of them sneaking in was to scare us," Lana chuckled, handing Chloe the bowl of melted marshmallows.

"I know; they're making more noise than a bull in a china shop!" Chloe chuckled. Taking the bowl she scooped a spoonful of the glop between two cookies.

"I think it's the house," she whispered. "Have you ever noticed that you never hear any of the staff wandering around in this place?"

"I just assumed they already left by the time I get here," Chloe replied with a shrug. "Besides, I'm usually not here long enough to notice, and why are you whispering?"

Lana chuckled at the accusation, and then stared at her friend as realization dawn on her. "That's what started the attraction between you and Lex, isn't it? My asking you to drop off the reports for me."

"You're sharp as a tack, Lana," she jibed playfully, becoming uncomfortable. She didn't want to talk about anything concerning her and Lex. It was too unexpected, too thrilling, and too new to put any hopes of anything long lasting to come of it. "Are you ready to get the show started?" she asked with a sly grin, picking up the tray of smores and the bowl of popcorn.

Lana looked at her friend. She noticed the uncertainty in her whenever she mentioned Chloe being with Lex. How she became uncomfortable and hid it by changing the subject.

"Chloe," she stated, placing her hands on the tray to take it from her. "For what it's worth, I hope this works out for you."

"What are you talking about?" she quipped with feigned indifference, hiding her true emotions. "It's not like I'd want to marry him or anything. I'm simply enjoying the attention." She shrugged nonchalantly and turned toward the door to see Lex standing in the doorway. "Lex! I swear--you really have to stop doing that!"

He stepped sideways as Chloe brushed past him and turned his gaze toward Lana. Chloe hadn't shown any outward reaction to him over hearing her statement, but Lana displayed enough embarrassment for both of them with flushed cheeks and the inability to meet his eyes directly. She politely excused herself with wayward eyes as she followed Chloe back to the other room.

Lex turned toward a flight of back stairs to distance himself from them. His attraction to Chloe was complicated enough without thinking of anything coming of it, and yet somehow Chloe's statement had hurt. He thought he was more than a simple past-time, obviously he was wrong.

"Lex?"

He jolted slightly, turning around to see her standing directly behind him. He had been so engrossed in his own thoughts he hadn't heard her approach from behind. The amused smirk that formed on her lips told him she had noticed his slight start.

"Now that's a moment I'll cherish forever," she beamed with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "It's not fun having someone sneak up on you, is it?"

He wanted to take her lips in his, to feel her body pressed against him, but suddenly it didn't seem right to do so. His attraction to her came as something pleasant in his otherwise morbid world. For the first time in his life he was getting involved with someone with no ulterior motives, and he suddenly realized what that could mean.

"It happens on occasion. I'm not infallible you know."

She noticed the indifference in his attitude toward her immediately. The hurt grabbed her heart like a vice. Once again she ruined a good thing because of her big mouth. She wanted to tell him she didn't mean it, that she liked being with him, that she was more than willing to see how far they could go together. But she wouldn't say any of those things; she was incapable of setting herself up to be hurt more if he rejected her feelings.

"None of us are, Lex," she replied a little too defensively. She briefly closed her eyes and held her breath, realizing she had sounded more snide than she had intended. "I was just making sure you were coming back to finish watching the movie. After all, I think it would be unfair for you not to be a part of what we planned."

"I told you I planned on making myself scarce, Chloe, I merely made myself available until they showed up."

"Right," she voiced, his rejection stung more than she wanted to admit. "Well, see you when it’s over then," she quipped indifferently, and left him to return to the other room.

"Is everything all right?" Lana asked when Chloe returned and plopped herself down with a humph.

"Just fine," she retorted, grabbing the bowl of popcorn. "Let's just pretend to watch the movie."

~

Pete lithely pulled back from the doorway. "OK," he whispered real low. "They're sitting on the couch. Follow me, I figured out a way to sneak up behind them."

They silently moved among the shadows, working themselves unnoticed into the room until they were both crouched on hands and knees behind the sofa. They gave each other knowing grins before jumping to their feet yelling loudly as they hulked over the girl's heads.

With synchronized movements, the girls screamed in startled fear and jumped from the couch, popcorn flying in the air to land all over the couch and floor as they rushed to hide behind the large TV.

"Clark! Pete!" they each exclaimed, their tones full of fearful annoyance.

The boys fell over the back of the couch in hysterics, missing the fleeting smirks shared by their female friends.

"I can't believe you would do that to us!" Lana exclaimed breathlessly, holding her hand over her heart believably.

"How did you get in here?" Chloe asked. "I thought Lex locked up for the night."

"He did," Clark laughed. "We crawled in through a window."

"And it's good to know my security works," Lex stated from the doorway, gaining everyone's attention. "The alarm went off as soon as you opened the window," he explained.

"And you didn't warn us that someone broke in?" Chloe more so demanded than asked.

"That's what I intended when I met you in the kitchen, but decided not to worry you needlessly."

"You 'knew' it was Clark and Pete, didn't you?" Chloe accused.

"Did you tell them it was ok for them to scare us tonight, Lex?" Lana asked with hurt filled eyes.

"Hey, it wasn't all Lex's fault," Clark chimed in. "I asked him if we could drop by and he said yes, but I didn't elaborate on 'how' we planned to do it, so he didn't know."

Chloe and Lana exchanged incredulous glances with each other. "It sounds like we've been set up all around, doesn't it?" Chloe asked, sounding disgusted.

"Aw come on, Chloe, we were just having some fun!" Pete pleaded, moving closer to her for forgiveness.

"Well maybe I'm sick of your idea of fun," Chloe stated, looking from Pete to Clark with hurt filled eyes. "I'm tired of being the butt end of all your jokes," she added, her eyes becoming misty. Expelling a huffed breath she glanced at Lex. "And you let them!" She shook her head. "I've had it, I'm leaving."

She moved past Lex to retrieve her bag and jacket when he grabbed her arm. "We had a deal, Chloe," he stated firmly, everyone looking at them questioningly.

"And what 'exactly' would 'that' be?" she asked incredulously, pulling her arm free.

"You promised to make me watch these horror flicks till I needed a flashlight in my own home. I'm holding you to that promise."

Chloe glanced at Lana for some assistance, only to end up being committed to her words.

"I did hear you say that, Chloe," Lana admitted regretfully.

"Fine," she voiced with indifference. "But I refuse to sit near 'those two'," she said, glaring at them angrily. She plopped on the couch, brushed the spilled popcorn onto the floor, and sat with her arms crossed over her chest.

"And I didn't think this was going to be fun," Lex chuckled.

It's the girls reactions. They are smirking as they hide behind the tv and then they get all indignant with the boys and Lex and it looks like they are about to storm off. It could be all part of the plot at getting back at the Clete there (you know, lull them into a false sense of security) but Chloe just seemed really upset, that I thought it was for real. I could be mistaken. Happens quite a bit you know.

Same reaction here. I think its all part of Chloe's and Lana's plot. Maybe Chloe was confused that Lex actually went on with the plan after what happened in the kitchen?

Update and explain SOON! This fic is very good!

Yep I have to say that I had the same reaction as Aimme and everyone else. The whole idea of the girls esp Chloe being upset...is that a part of their plan? Coz if not I don't get it! Like Kris said, I hope Chloe and Lex can start comunicating or they're gonna end up with problems!

I hope that helped, and I hope you continiue to read the rest! Which, since I'm at it--may as well post now...

Boys Will Be Boys IV

"Did you hear that?" Lana asked with paranoia at the sound of a door slamming somewhere in the mansion.

"It's probably just a draft," Lex surmised. "It happens all the time when a door isn't closed properly."

"Go check it out, Clark?" Lana begged fearfully.

"Me? Why me? It's Lex's house."

"I'm sure it’s nothing, Clark, but if it makes Lana feel more at ease then feel free to go check," Lex stated, paying attention to the movie.

"Please, Clark? I won't be able to watch this not knowing what that was," Lana pleaded.

"Pete, come on, we'll go check it out," Clark said, getting to his feet.

"Why do I have to go?!" he complained, rating a disgruntled look from Clark. "Fine," he conceded disgruntled, getting to his feet. "The sooner we get this over with, the sooner we can finish the movie."

Lex glanced over his shoulder to make sure they had left the room before slipping his arm around Chloe's shoulders. He was still beside himself about his feelings for her, and her apparent lack of any for him, but he wanted to feel her next him and planned to take advantage of the situation. He was rewarded by her snuggling closer, tucking herself under his arm.

"Do you think they suspect anything?" Lana whispered, keeping her eyes to the screen.

"I doubt they'd be roaming the halls of the castle if they did," Chloe said with gleeful satisfaction. "They didn't even take a flashlight!" she chuckled.

"You're really enjoying this, aren't you?" Lex asked, close to her ear.

"Yes, I am," she smiled up at him, and placed a piece of popcorn in his mouth. She had been so relieved when he slipped his arm around her shoulders. She hadn't realized how much she liked being near him until the possibility of him never touching her again presented itself. Her breath caught in her throat when he took her fingers into his mouth along with the kernel, his tongue slowly licking at their buttery tips.

~

Clark used his x-ray vision to scan the rooms and hallways when they reached the second floor.

"There's someone in that room," he whispered, gesturing toward a closed door nearby. "and he's armed."

Sneaking to the door, Clark opened it with sudden force then grabbed the stunned man hiding behind it, knocking him out with a blow to the head.

"I have a feeling he ain't part of Lex's Halloween theme," Pete stated as they looked down at the ninja attired man.

"I think you're right, this is a dart gun," Clark replied, bending down to examine the weapon, and then looked up with realization.

"They don't travel alone," Pete said with apprehension, sharing Clark's thoughts. In the blink of an eye Clark was gone, leaving Pete to take care of the unconscious man on the floor.

Clark super sped back to the room where they had left everyone only to find it empty, the movie playing on without an audience. "Lana! Chloe! Lex!"

He turned and checked the kitchen, calling out for them again at not finding them there, then super sped through the halls to check the rooms he was familiar with before he returned upstairs to Pete.

"I can't find them anywhere."

"Well, this guy isn't going to be any help. You knocked him out good, Clark."

"Lets find rope or something and tie him up; we have to find the girls and Lex."

Pete nodded, both of them sharing uneasy apprehension for what could have happened to their friends.

~

"I can't believe that worked!" Chloe said with excitement from the couch. "Did you see the expression on his face?"

"I can't believe I let you talk me into this," Lana complained sourly, sitting next to her. "This green stuff can't possible be good for the skin."

"I don't think this is going to wash out of silk," Lex mused aloud. "That was my favorite shirt." Both girls turned their heads toward his voice with amusement, though they couldn't see each other. "I'm not even going to ask how you obtained a jar of the invisibility potion."

"That's good, cause I won't tell you," Chloe replied, moving to follow Lex's voice.

"Chloe?" Lana chimed, feeling her stand up. "Where are you going?" she asked, assuming she was leaving the room.

She found Lex's legs with her bare foot and climbed onto his lap to straddle his hips. Before he could say anything she found his lips with hers, starting with butterfly kisses at his neck, her hands sliding over his bared shoulders.

"Chloe?" Lana called, standing up. "Lex, do you know where she went?"

His hands easily found her naked body and pulled her tighter against him, deepening the kiss. He slipped his tongue past her lips to meet with hers heatedly. She felt him harden between her thighs and shifted over him, rubbing the head of his cock with her clit teasingly.

"Lex?" Lana called softly with uncertainty. "Come on guys, you didn't leave me here alone, did you?" she asked, trying not to sound upset. A moan escaped Chloe's throat as she eased down on his hardness. "Oh god," Lana voiced. "Please tell me your not having sex with me standing here."

Chloe rubbed the side of Lex's head, tilting his face up to kiss him harder. Her hand, combined with his sweat, wiped off the gel and exposed his ear. Making it the only visible part of their bodies. Lana sucked in a horrified breath and covered her mouth.

"I don't believe the two of you!" she barked and briskly headed for the kitchen.

"Maybe we shouldn't chance ingesting this glop," Lex cautioned against her lips.

Chloe reached over and grabbed the paper towel she had used earlier for her buttered fingers and wiped his lips, jaw, and neck with it before doing the same to herself.

"Better?"

"Not quite," he replied, taking the napkin he gently wiped Chloe's breasts, teasing her exposed nipples with his visible fingertips in the process. "That's better," he breathed. He grabbed her breasts in his hands, his tongue flitting over the nipples teasingly before taking one in his mouth, sucking on it gently while Chloe slowly rocked against him.

He repeated the action with the other breast, thrusting into her in time with her rhythm. She pushed down hard onto him, biting at her bottom lip to keep from crying out when he bit at her tit with his teeth. She bent over him, taking his earlobe between her lips, sucking on it, and then trailed her mouth down his neck to nip and lick at his sensitive points.

He released her nipple with a gasp of air when she hit a particular nerve; he bucked his hips into her harder, grabbing her ass to pull her down on him fiercely.

She slid herself slowly up the length of him, choking a loud moan when he pulled her back down harder and deeper.

He grabbed her by the waist, urging her to move faster in a heated frenzy. With one final thrust, he penetrated deeply into her very core. He groaned loudly between clenched teeth, vaguely remembering the others were in the house. Chloe collapsed against his chest breathlessly, breathing hard into his neck.

"I think we scared Lana," Lex he whispered at her ear a couple minutes later.

"Do me a favor and 'never' say her name after we've had sex," she quipped irritably.

He chuckled, running his hands up her bare back. "We do look frightful, though."

She sat up and started laughing. Various parts of their bodies had become exposed by their rubbing and touching each other. "I admit, we do look really freaky," she agreed, rubbing around his eyes to make them visible. She leaned forward and kissed him tenderly on the lips, lingering for just a moment. "I didn't mean what you overheard me say in the kitchen, Lex," she whispered sincerely. "Call it a remnant of past experience, but I don't want Lana to know how I really feel about you."

"How do you really feel about me, Chloe?" he asked, his voice tight with emotion. He gently rubbed around her eyes with his fingers so he could see the expression she held in them.

"It's more than just sex," she admitted, but refused--was too scared--to admit anything more than that.

"I'm glad you told me," he said softly, continuing to wipe her face with his thumbs. "I didn't like the idea that that's all I meant to you." He took her face in his hands and kissed her softly, his action telling her what he couldn't say in words.

"Psst! Chloe? Lex?" Lana's voice called in a hushed whisper from out in the hall near the doorway. "Are you guys done yet? I keep hearing noises upstairs. I think Clark and Pete are beating up all the actors!"

~

The boys found six more ninjas and two commandos on the upper levels of the mansion, with the help of X-ray vision. Clark easily overpowered them one at a time, but none of them would talk--swearing they didn't know anything. One of the commandos admitted that their orders were to secure the halls, but he wouldn't elaborate. He was tied up and locked in one of the rooms upstairs with the rest of them.

"There has to be someone else in the mansion," Clark stated, scanning all the rooms as they made their way back downstairs. "Those guys are obviously the lackeys for whoever is in charge."

"I want you to remember that I told you this was a bad idea! When I get a bad feeling, it's no joke!"

"You can't mean that?" he half asked, looking over at Pete. "Lana and Chloe are in trouble, and we're the only ones who know about it to help them."

"Yea, and it's Luthor's fault! Clark, man, I keep 'telling' you that that guy is no good, but you never listen to me!"

"Do you smell that?" Clark asked after they entered the room where they last saw their friends.

"Yea, buttered popcorn," Pete replied with a slight edginess, "Which reminds me that I haven't eaten anything since lunch. You said they would have pizza!"

"No, there's another scent in here."

"Don't tell me you've turned part bloodhound too, when'd that happen?" Pete asked, referring to Clark's super powers.

"Can you just tell me if you smell anything besides food?"

Pete sniffed the air with deep breathes through his nose. "Roses? Lex's over priced aftershave? Oh wait, he doesn't need aftershave, does he?" he added, chuckling at his own humor. Clark gave him a chagrinned expression. "Yeah. All right. How about I just keep my mouth shut? What do you smell anyway?"

"I smell sex," he stated flatly, slightly irritated at Pete for not taking the situation more seriously. It never occurred to Clark that his friend's humor could be a mask to hide his fear and anxiety for what was going on.

"Now how the hell would you recognize what that smells like, or are you holding out on me and not being upfront with all that goes on with you and Lana?"

"My parents are very active sexually," he replied, blushing slightly. "I think the only place on the farm they 'haven't' done it, is in 'my' room!"

"Whoa!" Pete exclaimed, putting his hand on Clark's shoulder. "What about your loft in the barn?"

Clark fixed him with a firm glance.

"Aw man!" he exclaimed with distaste. "I slept on that couch!"

"Yeah, well, can we talk about that later? Right now we need to focus on what's going on here and find Lex and the girls."

"Eww! You can't drop something like that on me and expect me to forget it just like that!" Pete said, snapping his fingers for emphasis.

"Then don't forget it, just deal with it later!" he said sharply. "What is wrong with you that you're not taking this seriously?!"

"I am taking this seriously, Clark," he replied, his tone suddenly very deep and serious. "But unlike you, I'm not used to having to deal with this shit. I'm always the back up guy, the one who shows up after everything is over. I'm never the one who might walk into a room and find myself staring down the barrel of a gun."

"Pete, I'm sorry. I didn't think..."

"Yeah, I know," he said with a little bitterness. "But that's cool," he added in a lighter tone, shrugging his shoulders. "I'm not the one who's bulletproof, so don't think it bothers me all that much, cause it don't."

"Then I guess you won't like my idea of us splitting up to search for Lex and the girls," Clark half asked.

"Can't you just 'X-ray vision' everything from here?"

"No," he answered, sounding frustrated. "There's lead in some of the walls."

"No, shit! Why the hell would a medieval castle need lead in the walls?"

Clark shrugged. "Maybe Lionel had it added when it was rebuilt over here from Scotland?"

"And you still want to be Lex's friend? Don't you have any kind of warning senses? A danger alarm, like when the hairs prick at the back of your neck?"

"No," Clark laughed. "But I wish I did, that would come in really handy, don't you think?"

"For as often as you get in trouble? Damn straight!"

"Chloe, I'm going to see if Lana found Clark and Pete," Lex called into his private bathroom, waving wisps of steam from his face at opening the door half way.

"OK," she called back from the shower stall. "I'm almost done; I'll meet you in the library in a few minutes."

"Just don't wait until you run out of hot water," he said, smiling knowingly. "I had the plumbing upgraded within a week of my moving in."

"OK!" she laughed, wondering how he knew that was her intention.

Lex closed the bathroom door for Chloe before stepping into the hall, closing that door as well. He walked down the hall about four feet when someone came up from behind and knocked him over the head with a blunt object. Lex fell to the floor unconscious without knowing what hit him.

Boys Will Be Boys V

"Did you hear that?" Clark asked, putting his hand at Pete's chest to make him stop walking, and strained his hearing.

"No, what did it sound like?" Pete whispered.

"Like a body falling on the floor," he replied, sounding distracted while glancing at the ceiling. He turned his head suddenly in the direction they just came from. "Lana!" he whispered, and super sped off somewhere, leaving Pete by himself.

"Oh that's just great, Clark!" Pete called after him, knowing it wouldn't do any good. He turned back around to look down the dimly lit hallway. "This is bullshit, I swear, this is fucking bullshit!" he grumbled to himself aloud. Squaring his shoulders and taking a deep breath, he continued on alone.

~

"Lana!" Clark called from the bottom of the stairs.

"Clark!" she responded, her voice coming from near the kitchen area.

Clark sped down and around the hall, slowing to normal as he turned the last corner to see Lana running his way.

"Clark!" she cried with genuine relief, and rushed to hug him. "I'm so glad I finally found someone! This place is really starting to freak me out. I keep hearing weird noises, liked muffled moans and banging from upstairs. And twice it sounded like someone was behind me, but there was nobody there when I turned around."

"I can explain the noises upstairs, but first where's Lex and Chloe?"

"I don't know. Lex said he needed to make a call, and I went to the kitchen for some soda. When I came back Chloe was gone too," she lied, covering for Chloe and Lex having to get showers. "I've been roaming these hallways for what seems forever trying to find someone. Where's Pete?"

"Pete! Oh shit! Come on, I'll explain on the way."

~

Chloe stepped from Lex's bedroom a few minutes later, letting the door close not too quietly behind her as she tried to think of a reason for why her hair was wet. Lex Luthor, bald, no hair dryer, should of thought of that 'before' plastering green stuff all over the body and needing a shower! She briefly wondered how Lana faired with that dilemma.

She walked at a snail’s pace, briskly fluffing her hair with her fingers in an attempt to air dry it when she heard muffled sounds coming from a room close by. Slowing down even more, she stared at the closed door in question with curious apprehension. She turned around and glanced behind her for any sign of not being alone but didn't find one.

Stepping tentatively to the door, she put her hand on the doorknob; the muffled voice was now accompanied with the sound of thumping.

"Lex?" she called quietly, opening the door with caution, trying to peer into the dark room using the light from the hall.

Standing in the doorway, she pushed the door all the way open, letting it bang lightly against the wall, assuring her that no one was hiding back there. The noises were coming from across the room, a closet apparently. She ducked her head in past the doorjamb to look for a light switch. Finding it, she flicked on the lights to find a near empty room with only a couple dusty end tables in it.

The banging increased dramatically when the lights went on, the closet door shaking on it hinges. She crossed the room, and with a deep breath for confidence, she pulled it open.

"Pete!" she exclaimed with surprise, dropping to her knees to untie and gag him. "What the hell happened?"

"There's a bunch of men in the mansion, and it ain't good!" he answered when his mouth was freed.

"And one of them did this to you?" she asked with confused surprise.

"Yea, he was one of the commandos," he said, pulling the rope from his ankles. "He snuck up behind me, but I got a glimpse of him before he hit me in the head and lights out."

"Commandos?" Chloe asked with raised brows.

"Yea, me and Clark found two others stalking the halls, along with a few ninja dudes, this guy must be the leader though."

"Wait a minute," she voiced, shaking her head. "Back up. Ninjas? Commandos? 'What' are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about, someone stormed the castle and they ain't looking for virgins! These guys are the real deal! They have dart guns, sharp shooter rifles, rope, throwing stars, the works!"

"Oh my god, Lex!" Chloe said fearfully, jumping to her feet. "We have to find Lex!"

"We have to find Clark and Lana first!" he rebuffed, and tried to grab her arm.

"No, you don't understand! I have to... you find Clark and Lana! I have to find Lex!"

"Chloe!"

Before he could stop her, she darted from the room and ran as fast as she could down the hallway.

~

"Pete!" Clark called entering the hall with Lana.

"Clark!" he responded, rushing to meet up with them. "We have some serious trouble. I was hit from behind by our commando leader. Chloe just found me tied up in the closet, but before I could stop her she ran off to look for Lex."

"Which way did she go?" Pete pointed in the direction down the hall. "Take Lana back downstairs, I'll see if I can find her and Lex too."

"Wait a minute," Lana said, grabbing Clark's shirt before he could move. "What are you talking about? What commando leader? Are you serious, were you hit from behind?" she asked Pete.

"Well this sure as hell ain't a tumor!" he stated, turning around for Lana to examine the knot on the back of his head.

"Pete and I found a bunch of men in the mansion," Clark explained. "Most of them in ninja attire complete with accessories. Two of them looked like commandos."

"Make that three," Pete corrected. "I got a glimpse before he hit me, he was in commando gear."

"So, they're the real thing?" Lana stated slowly, digesting everything. "That means Lex is in real trouble," she surmised, looking from one friend to another. "He didn't exactly hide the fact that he gave his entire staff off for the night and was going to be home. He left himself open for someone to try and hurt him."

"Yea, and getting us caught in the middle of it in the process," Pete said bitterly. "Now Chloe's gone off to look for the bastard by herself! I swear if anything happens to her, he's going to pay for it!"

"I'll find Chloe. You and Lana head back downstairs, and call for help."

"You can't go by yourself, Clark, it's too dangerous. There's safety in numbers."

"I'll be fine. Just go with Pete and try to call for help," he called over his shoulder, starting down the hall at a quick, but normal, pace.

~

"Come on, snap out of it," the male voice ordered. A hand slapped at his face to revive him from unconsciousness. "I want to talk to you before the sedative takes effect."

Lex moaned low in his throat, his head felt like he was hit by a ton of bricks. Opening his eyes, he tried to focus his blurry vision on the man standing before him. Unable to accomplish that feat, he turned his head, rapidly blinking his eyes to at least see where he was.

"Look at me," the man ordered, and roughly grabbed Lex's jaw. "I want you to know who did this to you."

Lex tried again to focus, his mind not able to get past the pain. "Who are you?" he rasped, trying to move his hands but found them bound behind him.

"Oh come now, Lex, surely you recognize my voice," he said snidely, leaning closer to Lex's face. "Even through that haze you call a brain." The man stepped back a pace before continuing. "I admit, you and your father got me good. Now let's see how Lionel Luthor carries on without his infamous son to pick up the slack."

"Sir Henry," he said, swallowing hard at his brain trying to function through the pain.

"Ah, I knew you would get it eventually! Bravo!"

"My father won't meet any demands, Henry, you know that."

"There will be no demands, Lex. You are simply going to disappear, after signing over LexCorp to me that is."

"You're delusional," he breathed heavily, fighting the dizziness. "My father knows I would never sign anything over to you."

"You're right. He would see right through that. That's why you left everything to your lovely girlfriend in case of your death. Chloe Sullivan, I believe her name is."

Lex laughed despite the pain. "That's more absurd than your first idea."

"Don't be so hasty, Lex. You see, you sign everything you own over to Miss Sullivan, who currently is a minor, and would need a financial advisor to take care of things until she turns of age. That financial advisor would conveniently work for me of course. But no worry about the little Miss, by the time she reaches eighteen there won't be anything left of LexCorp, as it would be swindled undetected into my own companies and I will step forward just in time to save the poor dear from bankruptcy."

"You're crazy. You won't get past the forged signature on the papers."

"Oh, I have already done that, dear boy. But I wonder if your father would ever suspect me, or go after the sweet little nothing you're shagging behind everyone's backs."

Lex wanted to fight. He wanted to point out how ludicrous the idea was, and how Sir Henry would never get away with his plan. But his head grew too heavy to hold up, his eyes slipped shut, and he was met by darkness.

Boys Will Be Boys VI

Chloe found a set of back stairs and paused briefly with indecision. Should she go up, or down? She wanted to go down; her instincts told her that the perpetrator would take Lex out of the castle as quick as possible. But something kept pulling at her to go upstairs instead. Shaking her head, she said "fuck it", and ascended the steps, ignoring her instincts and feeling like she was going the wrong way.

Reaching the hall on the next level, she turned left down the hall without any thought. She checked the first door, found it locked, and moved on to the next. Coming to the end of the hall with no luck, she heard what sounded like a whisper, though it was nothing tangible. She stared toward the darkened end, straining her hearing for any possible sound, her own footsteps sounding very loud in her ears.

"Is someone there?" she asked in a whispered voice, then cringed. 'Good one, Sullivan,' she chided herself. 'If there 'is' anyone there you just announced yourself if they didn't already know you were here!'

Reaching the bend at the end of the hall, she cautiously peered around the corner from the far wall, in case someone lurked just around the corner. The hallway was empty, or at least appeared to be in the near darkness. She looked behind herself to double check she wasn't being followed, and then looked ahead into the dimness before her.

Her breath caught in her throat, her feet froze in place, as she watched a blur of light pass through the near dark hallway about halfway from where she stood. She blinked a few times and focused on the spot again, whatever it had been was gone. She half glanced over her shoulder, not letting her eyes fully look at the lights at her back.

'It was just the lights playing tricks on my eyes. That's all.' She told herself.

Slowly she continued on, checking doors along the way until she found one that was unlocked. She realized without much thought that this was the spot she 'thought' she saw something. She tentatively opened the door to find another stairwell leading to a higher level.

It wasn't as clean as the other stairs and halls, telling Chloe it was used less frequently, and she could make out the distinct outline of footprints in the dust, boot prints to be more precise. Slowly she made her way upwards.

~

"Pete," Lana whispered urgently, grabbing his arm. "Did you just see that?" she asked, peering down a connecting hallway.

"Yea, but I wasn't going to say anything," he whispered back. "Whoever it was is down there, and we're not going anywhere near 'down there', so let's just pretend we didn't see anything ok?"

"But what if it was Chloe? Come on, let's go find out."

"No offense, but I already got hit in the back of the head once. I do 'not' want a second dose! And I'm always the one who ends up last! Besides that, we both know that it wasn't Chloe!"

"Fine," Lana stated flatly. "You go look for a phone and call for help, and I'll go check out what's down that hallway."

"Now you know I can't let you do that," Pete said with forced valor.

"Pete," she started firmly. "I close the Talon by myself every night. I walk home by myself more times than not, and I go riding in the back fields and woods of Smallville all the time. Alone. I am 'not' afraid to walk down that hallway to see if it leads me to my friends."

"Who said anything about being afraid? I sure as hell didn't! I'm just saying that we don't need to go down that way, that's all! And what happened to your, "Safety in numbers" theory?"

Lana looked at Pete with calm patience. "Are you coming with me or not?"

He took a deep breath, glancing waywardly down the other hallway. "I'll go call for help, you go check out 'down there', but we'll meet back right here in five minutes!" he said, emphasizing 'right here' by pointing his finger to the floor where they stood.

"Ok, I'll see you in five minutes then," Lana replied and started down the dimmer hallway.

'Since when do castles have phones anyway?' Pete thought to himself incredulously, heading down the steps toward the library below. 'Since a 'Luthor' moved to Smallville!' He answered himself with disgruntlement.

~

Chloe reached the next level, the door at the top of the stairs ajar. Slowly she pushed it open, causing it to creak loudly on its hinges. She cringed as though the sound were nails down a chalkboard.

'Well, so much for discretion,' she thought to herself. 'That was loud enough to wake the dead.'

She cautiously stepped into the hall, checking both directions with a peek around the door before moving on. The hallway was nearly pitched dark except for a dim glow of light illuminating from around the next hall.

'What is it with lights around the corner in this place?' she wondered sarcastically.

She cautiously peered down the next hall to see a room only a couple doors down pouring light into the hall by an electrical source, most likely an overhead lamp.

She waited only a couple seconds before shuffling toward the room, keeping to one side of the wall, knowing it wouldn't do any good if someone stepped out from the room, but it made her feel safer none the less.

Plastering herself against the wall near the doorway, she took a deep breath with her eyes closed, and prepared herself for anything that she might find. With a final breath, she slowly peered inside to see Lex tied to a wooden legged chair by wrists and ankles, his head was slumped against his chest.

Her heart lodged in her throat. She wanted nothing more than to rush in and untie him, to feel his warm skin and know for certain that he wasn't seriously hurt--or dead. But caution out won the impulse. Tentatively she peered through the crack of the opened door to check for someone hiding back there. The space was empty.

Moving into the room, she checked the other side of the wall near the door, and found that area empty as well. Her eyes briefly landed on the closed closet door across the room and dismissed checking inside, relying on the fact that so far every hinge in this section of the mansion creaked ungodly.

Finally, when she was certain no one was nearby, she rushed to him, gently raising his face in her shaking hands. Her first two fingers went to his neck, seeking a pulse. A deep sigh of relief escaped her lips when she felt the steady thumping.

"Lex," she whispered, cradling his face in her hands. She would untie him in a minute, first she wanted to wake him up and see those beautiful blue eyes. "Lex, come on, wake up," she pleaded softly.

A floorboard squeaked behind her. Instinctively, she dropped down to her knees as a rush of air went past over her head. She scrambled away from Lex, turning onto her backside to see behind her. An older man, possibly in his fifties, stepped forward, raising a foot long bar over his head for another swing at her.

She cried out and brought her foot up in self defense, caught him in the stomach, and shoved him back a couple steps. She scrambled to her feet heading for the door. Whatever the man had planned for Lex, he didn't seem to be in a rush to do him severe harm or he would already be dead. She had to get away from him, had to get Clark and Pete for help.

He swung the weapon again, barely missing her as she ducked past him. She grabbed the doorframe to give herself leverage to dart out into the hall when a hand roughly grabbed her from behind. He pulled her back with such force that she staggered backwards into the room a few paces before losing her balance and fell to the floor.

"I strongly suggest you stay in that position, Miss Sullivan," Sir Henry sneered at her.

"Who are you? How do you know my name?" she asked, shimmying herself along the floor to get away from him when he advanced toward her.

"I am an old acquaintance to the Luthor's, and you my dear, are the key to my success."

"I don't understand."

"You will in time. But for now, let's just say you are about to inherit a small fortune."

"Hey, asshole," Lana announced from behind Henry and delivering a vicious spin kick to the chest when he turned around, knocking him sideways to the floor.

Sir Henry raised himself to his knees, pulling out a gun from his inner jacket pocket. Chloe quickly scurried on her hands and knees toward him as his arm leveled out to take aim at Lana.

She grabbed his calf and pulled out the knife she saw strapped to his leg.

He turned his head toward Chloe, lowering the gun in his distraction, as Chloe plunged the blade into the side of his thigh. He cried out uproariously in pain, backhanded Chloe at the side of her face, and knocked her to the floor. Lana rushed at him from the other side, a copper artifact in her hands from the floor near the wall, and bashed him in the head with it. He slumped to the floor unmoving.

"Chloe!" she yelled, dropped the copper bowl to the floor, and rushed to her friend. "Are you OK?"

Chloe let out a couple of pain filled sobs, tenderly touching the side of her face, before taking a deep controlling breath. "Yeah, I'll be fine. Go get Clark and Pete, I'll help Lex."

"Are you sure?" she asked, her voice full of concern. "Together we can move Lex, and get him downstairs."

"Yes, I'm sure. Go get the guys before he wakes up," she stated, eyeing Sir Henry's prone form on the floor. "I don't want to take a chance of 'him' getting away."

"I'll be right back, Chloe," she promised. Then as an after thought, she added, "Here, keep this near you and whack him over the head again if he moves before we get back," she said, placing the bowl by Chloe's side before rushing from the room to go get the guys.

Chloe tearfully raised herself to her feet, trying to block out the throbbing in her head, and moved to undo Lex's ties. She started with his feet. His body slowly slumped to the floor as soon as his hands were released. She grabbed him by the shoulders and eased him gently to the floor, letting his head lay in her lap.

She gently caressed his brow, letting her thumb trace his cheekbone while tears spilled down her cheeks. "Come on, Lex, wake up."

"Chloe," he whispered, barely audibly.

She choke/laughed in relief. "Yeah, it's me," she whispered, and gently touched his lips with hers. She suddenly became aware of movement behind her and looked over her shoulder to see Henry staggering over to her with the copper artifact in his hand. Before she had a chance to react, he swung it hard, hitting her in the head, and rendered her unconscious.

Boys Will Be Boys VII

Lex groggily came to for his eyes to focus on Chloe's inert form on the floor, blood stained the back of her shirt and hair. 'oh my god', "Chloe!" he yelled, ignoring his throbbing head, his aching limbs from lack of circulation as he pulled against his restraints, not noticing that they were much tighter than before. "Chloe!" he repeated, his voice cracked with emotion. He couldn't tell if she was alive or not as she laid prone on her side. "Chloe!!" He struggled frantically to get free, to get to her, to see if...

"Lex!" Clark called from the doorway, entering the room.

"Check Chloe!" he yelled frantically, still pulling at his ties.

Clark rushed to her side and bent down to check the pulse at her neck. "She's alive," he told Lex over his shoulder. He gently rolled her to her back. "Chloe," he called softly, brushing her hair from her face.

He called her a couple more times before a soft moan escaped her lips and her eyes fluttered open. "Clark," she said and smiled up at him before full realization came back to her senses. "Lex!" she cried out urgently, grabbing Clark's shirt in a fist. "We have to find Lex! He's hurt!" she said, scrambling quickly to her feet.

Lex had let his head drop to his chest with a sigh of relief at hearing her moan to consciousness. With his eyes squeezed tight, he took a couple haggard breaths when she said Clark's name, a tightness formed in his chest at not being the one at her side holding her hand. Then she cried out his name, her voice full of fear and concern. He picked his head up as she rose to her feet, yelling at Clark on his behalf.

She froze for a split second upon gaining her feet, "Lex!" she yelled and rushed to him. "Clark you dumb ass, why didn't you untie him?!" she asked incredulously. "Lex, how bad are you hurt?" she asked, her voice full of concern as she made quick work of his bonds. She gently touched his face, holding it between her palms. "Lex?" she voiced, sounding worried when he just stared at her. She pulled her hand back curiously to look at the wetness on her palm, then met his eyes with wonder.

"I would 'have' to go into the room too," he said in a hoarse whisper. "I would rather die than to leave you bludgeoned and bloody."

She knew instantly that he was referring to the conversation her and Lana had earlier that night, before the guys showed up. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks. She stepped closer and wrapped her arms around his head, pillowing it against her breast. She kissed the top of it, then rested her cheek on the spot with her eyes closed. He raised his numb arms to wrap them around her waist, holding her in a tight embrace.

Clark watched them with confusion, not understanding the sentiment of Lex's words at all. Then briefly wondered when they had become so close with each other. He was about to suggest for them to go downstairs, when Lana showed up at the door.

She saw Chloe and Lex embracing, Clark close by with a confused expression on his face. His eyes lit up when he saw her in the doorway. She placed her finger over her lips for him to remain quiet and waved for him to follow her into the hall.

"You knew about them?" he asked, once in the hall.

"Yea, but I only recently found out myself so don't feel bad," she replied. "The police have Sir Henry in custody and are waiting downstairs for your statement; it's also rumored that Lionel is on his way to Smallville."

"Oh no," he voiced, looking back into the room at his two friends sharing a quiet moment. "Well, at least they'll have a little time to themselves before he gets here."

"They're going to have more than that," Lana said suggestively. Taking Clark's hand she led him down the hall to the stairs.

"We can't just leave them up here."

"Why not? It 'is' his home, and I have a feeling that this part of the castle isn't used that much." She stared at him for a moment, reading the indecision on his face. "Clark, a lot of people are going to object to them being together, let them have this night before the shit hits the fan."

"I guess you're right," he conceded. "Does this mean we get to handle Lionel Luthor when he shows up?" he asked with a sly grin.

"Pete's downstairs devising a plan as we speak," she grinned up at him.

~

"I need to get you to the hospital, you're hurt," Lex whispered at her breast after a few minutes. His hands met the sticky wetness of her back, reminding him of her injuries.

"I'll be fine," Chloe replied softly. "You're the one he drugged, on top of giving you a nice souvenir on the back of your head."

He pulled his head back to look into her eyes. "Chloe, there's blood all over your back, it's in your hair."

With a frown of confusion she stepped from his embrace and pulled her shirt off, checking the blood stain that he referred to. "This isn't my blood, Lex," she stated, then touched the back of her head. She found the caked blood in her locks, but found nothing on herself to be the cause.

"It must be 'his' blood from when I stabbed him," she surmised as Lex turned her around to see for himself, and found her back perfectly unmarred. She was going to ask who the man was, why would he want Lex dead, and what did he mean by her being the key to his success, but then his eyes met hers and his hand was on her skin, soft and warm.

"I meant what I said, you know," he said softly, running his hand up the soft skin of her back, mesmerized by the beauty of it. She shivered involuntarily. "Are you cold?" he asked, pulling her back to him and positioned her on his lap.

"No, far from it," she whispered, peering into his eyes. "Are you sure you're alright?" she asked with concern, seeing how he struggled to focus his eyes.

"Besides my head feeling like a lead balloon, I'll be fine. I'm trying to be sentimental, you realize," he stated more than asked, engulfing her in his embrace and leaning his head on her shoulder at her neck.

"Which is so unlike you," she chimed lightly. "That's why, as much as I love this Hallmark moment, I will wait until you come fully to your senses to listen to anything you have to say."

"Why is a part of me relieved to hear you say that?" he asked with grin, pulling her closer against him.

"Because you know it's true," she chuckled, as he nuzzled her neck playfully with his lips. She pushed him back slightly, just enough to look into his face, with somber eyes. "I was really scared, Lex. When I knew you were in trouble and I couldn't find you, I felt like I couldn't breath."

"How 'did' you find me?" he asked seriously. "If I'm not mistaken, this is the east wing of the castle, which is closed off and locked."

She chuckled nervously. "I'd like to say I followed my instincts, but they told me to go the other way." She stared deeply into his eyes. "I was led to you," she whispered almost inaudibly. "I don't know who or what it was, but it led me right to you."

An uneasy, thoughtful expression came to his features. He looked away from her, his brows creased in thought.

"Lex?"

He looked up at her and took a deep breath. "When I was unconscious, I heard my mother's voice tell me that you were coming, to not give up."

"Ok, now I feel cold." Goosebumps prickling her skin for emphasis. "Can we go downstairs, get rid of the candles, and turn on every light in this place?"

He stared at her so intently that she swore he could see through her. "My mother wants us together, Chloe," he breathed quietly.

"Your mother wanted me to save to your ass, Lex," she spat too defensively, pulling away from him to stand up. She shoved her fingers into her hair over her forehead in frustration. "I'm sorry," she amended immediately, turning back around. "I'm just not ready to admit that there might be something between us. And if you were thinking straight, you would agree with me!"

"Isn't thinking straight the reason we were both lonely and miserable in the first place?" She couldn't argue his point, he could see it in her eyes, it was written all over her face. "Admit it, Chloe, you snuck into my heart just as lithely as I did yours."

"I don't want to admit it, Lex," she whispered. "I'm afraid that if I do, I would lose you, and that would hurt too much."

"Then we'll just admit it to each other and keep it a secret."

"I like that idea, at least for now. And as for you sneaking around," she started lightly, reseating herself on his lap to wrap her arms around his neck. "We're going to have to work on that little habit of yours, it really is unnerving at times."

He chuckled, returning her embrace. "But I like sneaking up on you," he admitted freely. "I find out the most interesting information when you don't know I'm behind you."

"Hmmm," she sounded with a frown. "Then I'll just have to grow eyes in the back of my head so I can see you coming from now on."

He laughed with heartfelt sincerity and took her face between his palms. "You can try, but I'll always be behind you, Chloe," he said, pulling her in to kiss her deeply.

Mama knows, mama knows.

When you say just one more chapter to go, what you really mean is one more chap until the kick ass sequel right? right? DANG!

That's the problem with a good thing. Some spoil sport always thinks it has to come to an end. :tease:

Loved the last two chaps and it's a foregone conclusion I'll enjoy the conclusion too.

Hey All!

I've recently been searching for old fics that I had lost track of and was reminded that I never posted the last chapter to my own piece!

So, just to make it official, here is the last chapter for Boys Will Be Boys! I hope you like it.

ALL HEADERS AND DISCLAIMERS ARE SOMEWHERE BACK IN CHAPTER ONE!

Lionel Luthor arrived at Luthor Manor to find the castle full of teenagers dressed in all sorts of gala. The interior of the place was lit only by candlelight, giving him a hard time to find his way to the 'office'. The stereo enforced bizarre sounds echoing through the halls cut right through his brain, adding to the migraine that had already settled in his temples.

Hoping to find reprieve from this mess his son had created, he opened the door expecting to find solitude. He had sent word of his eminent arrival and would patiently wait for his son to find him, if he wasn't already lying in wait within the room Lionel now entered.

Apparently solitude was not to be found this particular evening. Lionel had walked into the room with self-assurance and grace, closing the doors behind him. Helping himself at the wet bar he became aware of something 'breathing' from the shadows surrounding him.

"Who is there? Show yourself immediately!" he commanded with authority.

"Oh shit, it's Mr. Luthor!" came an alarmed stage whispered voice. "What do we do?"

"Shh, maybe he'll go away." Was the barely audible reply.

"I am 'not' going away," Lionel announced regally. "Now come out of there so I may see you!" Lionel heard small shuffling sounds then more whispered voices.

"Go talk to him!" Lana had whispered, shoving Clark to give good sound effects.

They had known that Lionel Luthor would head straight for the room known as the office and had placed themselves within the shadows in an attempt to stall the billionaire, if not aggravate him enough that he would simply leave.

Before the police had wrapped everything up Pete had called a few select 'friends' from school and told them about a Halloween party going on at Luthor Mansion. He had made sure to tell them that it was 'by invitation only' to guarantee every teenager within three counties showed up within the hour.

Pete's plan had worked. They barely got the crates of snack food they had found in the pantry out on the table when people started showing up in hoards. Pete had rigged the intercom sound system to the stereo and slapped seven CD's of 'horror' sounds into the tray for a lively effect throughout the place.

Clark sped around the allotted rooms and hallways to light and replace candles that had already burned out or needed re-lighting. Once the party was started they had taken their places within the shadows of the office, barely making it before Lionel had arrived.

"I'm not going out there! You go talk to him!" Clark insisted in a hushed voice.

"He knows you! 'You' go talk to him!" Lana argued, trying not to laugh between her lines of dialogue.

"Go get Lex!" Pete hissed, keeping in tone with the other two.

"No way! You go find Lex!" Clark hissed back.

Lionel rolled his eyes at the shenanigans he was certain were for his behalf. Swirling his scotch idly in his glass before finishing it off, he placed it atop the bar and clasped his hands together, facing the direction all the commotion was coming from.

"Very admirable of you to place yourselves between myself and my son as a distraction," he stated with boredom. "However, I would appreciate at least 'one' of you to go find Lex and bring him to me."

"Is he out of his mind?" Pete play-acted. "We were hiding in here for a reason!"

"Shh! He doesn't know!" Clark whispered in a rush.

"Both of you shush!" Lana voiced between her teeth. "That man has hearing like a bat!"

"Like father, like son," Pete grumbled, not actually acting for that comment.

"Alright," Lionel announced, his patience thinning. "Come out of there this instant." He heard more scuffling noises, obviously the young people shoving each other as to who would come out first, along with whispered arguing reiterating Lionel's assumption. He was about to find the light switch to end all of this when Miss Lang was pushed out from within the shadows.

"Miss Lang," Lionel announced with mild surprise. He had known one of them had been a female but he had assumed the wrong one.

"Hello, Mr. Luthor," she replied sheepishly, twisting her hands together nervously after giving her friends a dirty look over her shoulder.

"Then I feel it is safe to assume, if you are part of this, young Mr. Kent isn't far behind?" he more so stated than asked, fixing his gaze towards the shadows lining the back wall.

"Uhm, yea, it's me, Mr. Luthor," Clark stammered as he appeared in the firelight next to Lana.

"Are there any more secrets you would like to divulge at this time, Mr. Kent?"

"No, not particularly," he replied, shaking his head and looking towards Lana uncomfortably.

"We thought you were Lex when you first came in, Mr. Luthor," Lana explained. "That's why we were hiding."

Lionel made a sound of disbelief before stepping closer to the pair. "You expect me to believe that you were 'hiding' from my son, in his favorite room, within his own home?"

Both Lana and Clark simultaneously smiled and nodded, obviously relieved that he had understood their intentions. Lionel found himself counting to ten in a foreign language he hadn't used in ages.

"Nothing like hiding right under his nose, right Mr. Luthor?" Clark stated with the confidence of stupidity.

"Where is my son?" he asked with exasperation, pinching the bridge of his nose. Why Lex surrounded himself with such incompetence, Lionel would never understand. "No, scratch that." He said, holding his head high again. "First explain to me 'why' you are hiding from my son."

Both their expressions dropped, their eyes shifted uncomfortably towards each other, and for half a minute the only response Lionel received were 'uhms' and 'ahhs' as they scrambled their brains to tell him anything but the truth.

"You want to know where Lex is?" Pete announced, stepping out from the shadows. "I'll tell you were he is!"

Pete had remained quiet as planned, waiting for the old man to give him the opening to do his part in this little drama. They hadn't had much time to really think about the consequences of what they were about to do, but he was in on it just to be able to get in Lionel Luthor's face, one on one.

"No, Pete, don't!" Lana cried out.

"Yes, Mr. Ross, please do," Lionel encouraged dryly, hiding the fact that he had forgotten there had been a third voice within the shadows.

"It was nice of you to open my home to every high school student in the a tri county radius," Lex stated dryly as he walked into the room, Chloe right on his heels. "You realize that they brought their own alcohol and are in the process of starting to fall down."

"Lex, I..." Clark stammered.

"We'll talk about this later," Lex stated at Clark, giving him a subtle smirk.

He wasn't sure how, but Clark was always able to catch the slightest facial expression from him and it came in handy in times like these. He wasn't upset about his home being over-run at all. He understood all too well that they had done it as a means to stall his father, if not an attempt to get rid of him so Lex wouldn't have to deal with him this time. Sadly, they just didn't understand his father.

Clark nodded, swallowing hard as he backed further away, giving Lex the room he would need to deal with Lionel himself. Placing a reassuring hand on Lana's arm, he winked at her to let her know that Lex wasn't mad about the party. She looked back at him with confused eyes. How the hell does he know these things?

"I'm sorry you made a trip all the way out here for nothing, dad," Lex announced towards his father with confidence. "Everything has already been taken care of. Sir Henry is in police custody along with his hired assassins, the forged documents have been recovered and dealt with accordingly, and I'll be fine. But thanks for your concern I appreciate your dropping by."

"You think this is a game?" Lionel asked rhetorically, holding his temper in check at his son's wayward attitude. "You're going to have a day when your farm boy friend won't be around to play bodyguard, Lex."

"Actually, dad, it was Chloe and Lana who stopped Henry," he informed him smugly. "Though Clark and Pete helped with the hired assassins."

"If you had taken the precautions I taught you this type of situation would never have been possible."

"I've taken the biggest precaution I have at my disposal, dad. If anything happens to me, Chloe would run the business in my place. Think of it as having the daughter you never had. Someone new to train in the arts of deception and lies."

"She's not family, Lex. It wouldn't hold in court."

"She will be, once she finishes school."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying, meet my fiancée, dad." Chloe hides her surprised shock, while the rest stare slack jawed. "And, if by some unpredicted play of fate, something should happen to Chloe then everything goes to Clark and the Kent's. I'm sure Jonathan would make a very interesting business partner, don't you?"

"You need your head examined if you think I'll let you get away with this!"

"I've given people I trust the position to watch my assets without worrying about them stabbing me in the back."

"You've gone too far this time, Lex." Lionel leaves in a huff already dialing his attorney's number as he walks out the door.

"Man, he is going to be really pissed when he finds out that you just fed him the biggest load of bullshit!" Pete exclaimed, laughing to relieve the tension in the room.

"What makes you think it's bullshit?" Lex asked with a smirk.

"Uhm, Lex," Chloe voiced. "Not that I'm not flattered or anything, but, when did I get promoted to fiancée?"

"A year ago," he shrugged casually.

"And when were you planning on filling me in on this?"

"Well, I wanted to have a couple of dates with you first, but considering the change of circumstances I think the sooner the better."

"No fucking way!" Pete exclaimed, looking at Lana. "He did 'not' just tell her she was marrying him! Am I hearing this right?" he asked incredulously, glancing at Chloe. "You're not seriously going to consider this, are you, Chloe?"

"Actually," Chloe mused out loud, looking up at Lex. "I've always been partial to May weddings."

"I don't fucking believe this!" Pete yelled.

Lex walked over to his desk, opened the top drawer, reached in, and pulled out what everyone recognized as 'the box'. He returned to Chloe, standing before her as he flipped open the lid to show a brilliant cut diamond set in gold, the jewel not lacking for authenticity in the least.

"Is that it?" Chloe asked, shocked that the jewel wasn't the size of a golf ball.

"Well, you have small fingers," he shrugged. "Trust me, it's flawless."

"That, I have no doubt."

The room became quiet, Lana holding her hand over Pete's mouth.

"Will you marry me, Chloe?" he asked her, holding her gaze with a touch of uncertainty.

"I should make you squirm," she smirked at him, holding his gaze steadily. "But considering everything you've been through tonight, I'll let you off the hook. Yes, Lex Luthor, I'll marry you."

Clark and Lana let out their held breaths, smiling happily for their friends. Pete, wasn't thrilled about this at all, but knew this meant a lot to Chloe or she wouldn't have agreed to any of this.

Lex slipped the ring on Chloe's finger and met her waiting lips to give her a deep lingering kiss.

"Ehem," Clark sounded, clearing his throat as Chloe pulled Lex's head down to deepen their kiss, pressing herself fully against his body in response.

They broke their contact and smiled at each other.

"I won't congratulate you," Pete said, stepping up to the couple. "But I'm sure you know what I'll do to you if you hurt her."

Lex smiled with cocky confidence at the threat he knew was sincere. He had a sharp come back on the tip of his tongue until he glanced at Clark, the boy's expression had turned hard, backing up Pete's words. Even Lana's eyes held a warning on her friend's behalf.

"Be assured that I'd never let anything happen to her," he answered, looking down at Chloe. "Besides, I have a feeling that Chloe wouldn't let me get away with anything too damaging."

Chloe smiled and returned his gaze. "I think we're off to a good start, now that we have some ground rules set."

"Ground rules?" Lex repeated, an uncomfortable half smile hinted at the corner of his mouth.

Pete started laughing, walking over to pat Lex on the back. "You know, this might be interesting after all!"

"There's nothing to tell," she shrugged.

"How can you say that? He kisses you like he means it, Chloe."

"Or... he just likes the taste of butter," she joked with a broad smile. "He's been licking my fingers throughout the movie, but I guess you didn't notice that."
