This piece is for three good friends of mine: Esther, who's manips have kept me writing like wildfire; David, who taught me how to write Clana (even though Clark isn't here---I still consider this slightly Clana since Lana is mentioned as his Mrs); and Jay, my oldest and dearest friend who has seen me through the X-Files, into Smallville fanfic writing and beyond. And who helped this shine a little brighter, because of his incredible beta skills. Enjoy.

Disclaimer: To whomever own's Smallville, its characters, Vampira, Richie Rich, Halloween, Valentines Day, and Mr. Clean, I'm just borrowing them, will give them back, not making any money with their use in this piece, so don't sue me.

Feedback: Yes I would love feedback.

Author Notes: This is for my friend, Esther. Whose introduction into Chlex and the show came from me pushing her into it and her saying, wow, you are right. I also count myself as the pusher of her showing her wonderful expressions to the World Wide Web too. I guess you might call us the Pushy Sisters. I also dedicate this to my friend, David, who introduced me his Lana and I took a cue from his. And to Jay, who's been by my side all the way, from the X-Files to here. And helped it shine a bit brighter with his great betaing prowess. Enjoy.

Halloween Fic - "Halloween Is Just Not The Same" - by PMD

Chloe's POV

Prologue: For years when I was a kid, Halloween was exciting---the costumes---the unexpectedness---the candy. But nowadays, after spending my teen years in Smallville, the place where weird things come to roost; it's just not the same. And now that I'm in Metro again, thinking, Halloween will be back to its unexpected self---Halloween is just not the same.

~

Metropolis Costume Factory

Well, if Lana can't find a costume here---I'm going to blow my head off with that fake gun. That will make her faint, have a concussion---and not be able to go to that annual bash of Lex's.

"Chloe, how about this one?"

I watch as my best friend twirls around in another princess costume and sigh.

"Not good?"

"Just the same, Lana---like the last ten you tried. Hey, how about this---you go as a blood sucking vampire."

She snorts. "Why would I do that?"

"Because you are sucking the life out of my Saturday afternoon," I mumble.

"What's that?"

"It'll be an unexpected change at the party."

She sighs. "Maybe you are right. And there are some cute Vampira costumes out there. And Clark could dress as one too."

"There you go."

"So, what are you going as---a sour puss?"

"Haha---very funny."

She walks up to me. "So, what are you going as?"

"I'm not going at all."

"But why?"

"Because I volunteered to give out the candy this year in my building."

"Oh---well---that's nice. Too bad though."

I raise an eyebrow. "Go on."

"Lex was hoping you would go as his escort."

I snort. "Right---Mr. 'Richer than Richie Rich' needs me as an escort."

"Chloe!"

"Sorry but he's probably got a couple on hand, in case he doesn't have a date."

"Couple of?"

"Women on hand."

"Ah---nope, not this year."

"Well, maybe he can go stag. That would certainly get the gossip columns wagging."

"Or maybe he could show up and help you hand out candy."

"Lana---I said wagging---not commit society suicide."

She laughs. "Well, you never know. Besides, Lucas is a pretty good host---he could go solo you know."

"True. So, let's find a Vampira costume, shall we?" I ask, offering her my arm.

"We shall," she replies, gladly taking it.

Lana's POV

Lex's Penthouse Suite

James lets me in, a smile on his face.

"Miss Lana, are you ready for tonight?"

"Yes, and so is my husband."

"The princess and the alien?"

I laugh and smile at the man who's become a father to us all.

Of course, after Lex was told about Clark's heritage there was no way we wouldn't tell James or Lucas. Although, James can keep a better face around Lionel when he spouts out that he believes that Clark isn't from around here. Lucas---well, I seem to recall him asking, 'Where do you think he's from, Dad? The moon?'

We all kept straight faces and then started to laugh after Lionel left in a huff. Course, Lex admonished his baby brother who just huffed at him, saying he would never let on to the world about Clark. As to what he did to their father, he did get rid of him.

"So, what do I owe the honor of your company, Lana?"

I turn to look at Lex walking out of his study, always alluring to women but not me---and evidently not Chloe, it seems. Unless---maybe she's playing hard to get. Lex does go for that.

"I need your help, Lex."

"Oh---and I would think that your husband would be all the help you need. Unless---" He looks at me, pointedly. "You need help with your cash flow, Lana?" he adds, a little worried.

"No---we're fine that way. No---what I need is your help to pull a friend out of a blue dating funk."

He stares at me again and then sighs. "Chloe."

I nod.

"Lana, that is why I asked you to ask her to be my escort."

"I know that but that didn't work. Seems she's handing out candy at her building this year."

"Oh---so, what can I do about that?"

"Forget about the party---go help her---and help her see that Halloween is just not the same, not because it's unexciting but it's really exciting."

"How would that work?"

I walk up to him and smile. "Oh, come on---you two have been doing the two-step around each other for way too long. Even my duffus husband can see it."

"See what?"

"God, do I have to spell it out for you?"

He nods.

"You two are so in love with each other that---it feels like Valentines Day when you're in the same room, not Halloween."

I notice the slight look of surprise in his eyes and then it disappears.

"Lana," he warns me.

"I give up. You two are hopeless."

I turn around and walk over to James. Then:

"More---hopeful."

I see the look of surprise in James eyes and then turn around.

"What did you say?"

The deadpan look on his face turns to a slight smile.

"I said I'm more hopeful."

My eyes brighten and I grin. "I knew it."

He chuckles now. "Course you knew it. But are you sure she feels the same way?"

"Awwww---Lexy is unsure---that's so, Clark."

He snorts at me and then smiles. "Maybe a little. But when it's this important---"

"---it really is important to know for sure. But Lex, that's what it's like to fall in love. Wondering if you will fly or fall. Wondering if the person feels the same way about you? The uncertainedness makes it all that more wonderful if it's true---and helps you to think at least you tried---if you are wrong. And I'm not wrong---I just have this feeling she does feel the same way."

"All right---I'll take your word for it---and not hold it against you if you are wrong. So, if I do go help Chloe, can you make sure that Lucas behaves?"

"Of course---what are friends for. Now what shall you go as?"

"Hmmmm----what is Chloe going to be?"

"A sour puss," I quip.

"Well, I'll try to be the lion tamer to her sour puss."

I laugh at that and then:

"Wait---how about a club singer?"

"Me?"

"No her, stupid. And then you can dress up like one of those honky tonk piano players."

"Nice idea, Mrs. Kent."

"I do have one, once in a while, Mr. Luthor."

"Okay---then here's your mission---get Chloe a beautiful club singer outfit---nothing pink. Purple or midnight blue."

"Purple it is."

"And you have it delivered to her place, fast."

"I'll get Clark to do that."

I stand there, looking at him. Then:

"Well?"

"Oh right---today. Okay---hope not to see you later, Lex."

"Right."

He nods to James behind me and I turn to see the man walking over and opening the door.

I turn back around. "Good luck, Lex."

"Good luck to you too, Lana. And thanks."

"Not a problem."

I turn around and walk towards the open door. I nod to James and then am out the door, on my mission.

Chloe's POV

Chloe's Apartment

Well, I've got an hour before I have to head downstairs. Thankfully, giving out candy doesn't mean wearing a costume but what the heck---give the kids some fun.

Now where is that librarian's outfit?

I hear a knock at the door and walk outside of my bedroom.

I inch closer---I'm not in Smallville so no meteor freaks tonight. Hmmmm---kids got up the elevator and want some candy?

I'm at the front door now and look through the peep hole. Nobody there.

I sigh and open the door to a white package before me.

"If there is something in there that squirts ink and I get it on my clothes, I'll be very angry," I yell out.

Nothing heard back.

I kneel down and put my ear to the package---not ticking---good sign.

I lift it up and shake it. Sounds okay.

I look out again and then back at the package.

I walk inside and close the door. There's an envelope taped to the front so I take it off and open it up:

Put me on and have some fun
Don't be scared and run, run, run.

A Friend

Interesting---the person can rhyme. Okay---I'll bite.

I leave the note in the living room and take the package into my bedroom. I put it on the bed, undo the ribbon around it, and take off the top.

I pull back the tissue and gasp at what's before me.

I pick it up and bring out a purple gown---a silky---shiny---singer for a bar---costume. It's beautiful.

I hold it out to me, looking at the sequins at the shoulders and along the v-shaped neckline---not too deep a v though. Can see some of myself but not a lot of myself, if you know what I mean.

And the skirt----its two layers of chiffon. It billows at the bottom---as I move the gown around.

I walk over to the full length mirror and hold it up to myself. Perfect---just the right length if I wear two inch heals. And I have the perfect heels for it---and purse too. And necklace---and---Lana. She had to have gotten this for me. Unless Lex or Clark have been looking around my closet---it's her.

I smile. Okay---I wonder what's coming next. I'll let this go to see what the night brings.

~

Downstairs in The Lobby

I get off the elevator after a few admiring glances from one gentleman and a not so nicely hit on his arm from his lady friend.

"Chloe, Chloe, Chloe!"

I smile at the children there. "Hey, Kids. Like my threads?"

"Yeah----who are you supposed to be?"

"I believe she is supposed to be a singer."

I look away from them to a certain somebody dressed as a---piano player?

"Hey, who's the dork with no hair?" one of the kids ask.

"Timmy---that's not nice," I say.

I look at Lex.

"Lex, what are you doing here?"

"I'm here to help you give out the candy to the kids. Well, at least most of them---I think Timmy deserves a lump of coal."

"That's Christmas, you dork!" Timmy grates out.

"Timmy!" Lex and I both state.

He just shrugs and walks away. Then he turns around---this impish look on his face.

"Hey, you like a bald guy."

"Yes, he's my friend," I say, hoping to get him off the track of where I think he's going.

"No---you really like him."

"Yes, she does. What are you getting at, young man?"

I swear, Lex is encouraging him.

He looks at Lex. And then:

"Chloe's got a boyfriend. Chloe's got a boyfriend."

Uuuuuugh.

Lex smiles at him and then looks at me. "She does? Anybody I know?"

Before I can say another word, Timmy takes the lead.

"Wow, not a smart boyfriend either."

I walk over to him and glare. "Okay---you can't be 10 years old."

"10 and a half."

"Want to see 11?"

"Chloe!"

I turn to look at Lex who's frowning at me. I sigh and look back at Timmy.

"Timmy---I'm sorry."

Timmy sighs. "I'm sorry I spilled the beans, Chloe."

I pat his shoulder and lean in:

"Its okay---I thought I would need a push to tell him."

I back away and he smiles. "She thought you would need one too."

My eyes narrow. "She?"

He gulps. "I think I hear my mother calling."

"She's in New York City, bub. Come on---give---who's this she who obviously paid you in candy to spill the beans?"

He looks beyond me at Lex.

"Don't look at him. He's not going to help you, Timothy."

"Hey, you know I hate that name."

"I know---so, if you don't want to hear it again from me---"

"It was Lana."

"Ahhhhhh," I hear myself and Lex say.

He walks up to stand beside me. "Timmy---it's okay."

Before I can say a word, there's a tap on the glass and we look over to see some adults and a couple of other kids waiting for the ones inside here.

"I believe you are being paged," I say to Timmy.

He gives me a sad look. "Oh, go on."

He brightens up and gives me a quick hug before joining the others to go outside.

"Watch both ways before you cross the street," I say, as they're about to leave the building.

Then we're alone with the knowledge that Lana is trying to be a Halloween matchmaker.

"So?" Lex asks me.

"So, I guess we better get ready for the kids coming around."

"All right---but we're going to talk about this later---agreed?"

"Is this before or after I maim Lana Kent?"

He chuckles at that. "Wow, Hazel Fury is in top form tonight. I'll distract Clark and you maim her then?"

"You're not to bad yourself, Luthor," I smirk.

Before anything else can be said, there's another tap at the glass and our job starts.

~

Two Hours Later

It's quieted down---the kids from my building returned about an hour ago, begging for some candy from us too.

We just smiled and put some in their baskets---except Timmy.

He doesn't even come over to us. Just stands by the elevator, waiting for his father to come get him.

I looked at Lex and he gestured I take him some. I did that and got a big hug for my trouble.

Now all of them are in their apartments and we're saying goodbye to the last of the kids not from my building---leading them to the outside and waving at them as they walk away.

He opens the door for me and bows, allowing me to walk in first. Then I walk over to the bench and sit down, sighing.

"Another Halloween just not the same," I state, looking at all the candy still here.

"Maybe I should take some of this back for Lucas?" he quips.

"Sure---why not."

"Chloe---are you okay?"

"Yes---why?"

He comes over and sits by me. "Well, you didn't say something funny about Lucas."

"Like what?"

He ponders for a moment and then his eyes light up:

"How about---can't Lucas buy his own candy? Or---isn't he a little old for that, Lex?"

"Lame," I quip.

"Okay---what would you say?"

"Hmmmm---nothing---I got nothing," I sigh.

He leans over to the candy on the nearby table and picks something up.

"Chloe, would you like a Halloween Kiss?"

"Sure," I state.

"Okay, close your eyes."

I look at him. "Why?"

"Just do it, Sullivan."

"Okay," I state, closing them.

I hear the crinkling of the wrapper and then sense him moving close to me.

"Okay, want me to open my mouth?" I ask him.

"Silence."

Okay, fine, whatever. What a drama king.

I sit there, sensing him backing off and then closing in. I'm about to ask him if I should open my mouth again when I feel a feather like brush of his lips against mine.

I sigh as he moves away and them comes back, this time kissing me with a little more force.

This time, when he tries to get away, I won't let him. The only thing that stops us is a clearing of the throat.

We back away to seeing Timmy's father and Timmy in front of us.

"Chloe."

"Hi, Jim. Timmy---what's going on?"

"I brought Timmy down because he wanted to say goodnight but I see that you are busy at the moment.."

I look at Lex, who's smirking. Then I look at them again. "Its okay, Jim."

"You sure? He can say goodnight to you tomorrow night instead."

"No---it's okay to say goodnight to us now, if he wants too."

We look at Timmy who gives us a little smile.

"Good night, Chloe and Mr. Clean."

His father looks embarrassed---I try to hide the smile that's coming from me---and Lex---he starts to chuckle.

"Timmy---apologize!" his father finally gets out.

"No---it's okay---I've heard worse," Lex finally gets out.

"It's true---he has heard worse," I add.

"Okay, well, time for bed, Timmy."

"Yeah, let's get away from here. Dad---he kissed her."

"Son, I believe that is something that happens when you fall in love---or just like a person."

"Not me---I'm never going to kiss a girl---she might give me cooties."

I hear a chuckle from the man beside me again and this time I have to laugh.

His father just shakes his head and leads him to the elevator.

The door opens and they walk in.

"Night, guys," I yell out to them.

The door closes and I'm all alone with the man again.

"Lex, you kissed me---why?"

"Because----"

"Because?"

He leans in and whispers something to me. He backs away and I feel a slight blush to my cheeks.

"Really?" I ask.

He nods.

"So, it won't take long to clean this up if we both do it."

"Yes, I'll help," he states.

"And afterwards---want to come up to my place and we can celebrate a Halloween just not the same."

He nods. And then ponders.

"What makes this Halloween just not the same?"

"Never been in love with somebody at Halloween before----and never had it returned---it is returned, right?"

He leans in, kissing away my fears and letting me know, I'm right. This Halloween just not the same from the others. From the childhood of trick or treating---to the teenage years of dealing with meteor freaks---to adulthood---until this very special night. When I knew I was loved by the man who I loved dearly too.

The End.
