Summary: Chloe makes a surprise visit to an old friend.

As she sat there staring out into the rain, she could nearly see the
headlights coming down the drive through the heavy sheets of water
pouring down over her already soaked clothes. As the sporty car
pulled up to the entrance an engine was turned off and she could see
him hesitate for a moment, looking at the drenched figure illuminated
only by the front lights. She could only imagine what he might be
thinking. Why she would be here for any reason at all.
Lex stepped out of the car and slammed the door quickly, jogging up to
the top step she stood on. "Chloe?"
Her lips quirked slightly and she tilted her head ever so casually.
"Lex." His name rolled off her lips easily as it had so many times
before.
Bright blue eyes stared down at her, a bit of confusion flashing past
normally not so readable eyes. "What are you doing here?" He still
sounded somewhat astonished, she couldn't blame him for the while they
had been apart.
"I wanted to visit my best friend, what do you think?" Her right hand
slowly raised to his face where she tentatively put fingertips to
smooth slick skin.
"Well, let's get inside, then you can tell me what prompted this
unannounced arrival of yours." He opened the door, already unlocked
as she knew it would be, and led her in through the grand entrance,
hanging his coat on the rack neatly arranged in a nook in the corner.
"Do you have dry clothes to change into?" He looked back over his
shoulder and grinned as she looked down at her clothes increduously.
"Actually, I don't. But I'll be fine." She gave him a small smile
and waited for him to lead the way once again.
They reached the living area in silence. A plush soft suede couch
awaited her restless body. She plopped down on it, quickly kicking
off her shoes. "So, you're wondering why I'm back from France so
early." She stated the truth, she knew the million possibilities that
could be running through his mind. She had only left four months ago
for a year of school abroad.
"Spring Break?" He questioned nonchalantly with a shrug and walked to
the fireplace, flicking a switch that ignited a small orange flame
under fake brown logs.
"No, that's next month." She pulled her legs up under her and drummed
the couch beside her with her fingers. "Sit, you're making me
nervous." He had been standing in the same spot beside the mantle
just staring down at her.
His movements to sit across from her seemed languid, yet unsure at the
same time. She was sure she was also making him a bit nervous.
"Okay, Chloe, lay it on me." His frame leaned forward ever so
slightly as his fingers steepled together. Chloe grinned and leaned
her head back until it rest comfortably against the back of the couch.
"Lex, do you remember what we were talking about the day before I
left?" At his unresponsiveness she took control of the conversation,
reminding him of what was said in their drunken stupor. "We got into
an argument, you told me I should quit wasting my time on men that
didn't deserve me." Her head bent slightly and she eyed him playfully
out of the corner of her eye. He remained placid. Again she took the
lead. "You told me that if I found the right guy, I would know."
He nodded, completely unaware of what was coming next as she stood up
and began pacing in front of him. She stopped in front of him and
knelt, her hands placed gently on his knees her wild hazel eyes
staring back up at him.
"I found him, Lex." She grinned broadly and let the upturned corners
of her lips drop slightly at his unwavering gaze. "Lex?" Her voice
broke him from the stupor he had found his way into.
"Chloe, are you telling me you found the right man for you, so you
traveled all the way from Europe to inform me?" His voice quiet and
unnerving. She frowned slightly.
"Well, yeah, it seemed rather inappropriate for me to send a singing
gram or something sordid of that nature." Her fingers started to slip
from his legs and she stood to her full height. "You know, maybe this
wasn't such a good idea." She turned and picked up her shoes, making
her way back to the front entrance.
"Chloe, stop. You came all the way home to tell me you found love,
and now you have to sit and tell me all about the man that captured
your ever evasive heart." His hand reached out and tugged at her
elbow gently until she turned and looked back up at him.
"Stupid ass." She swore under her breath. Lex pulled back slightly.
"Did you just call me a stupid...ass?" His voice broke gently in a
slow smile.
She pulled her elbow gently from his grasp and grinned knowingly up at
him. "He's you, Lex." His eyes didn't register for a moment and then
they took a slight grey overtone as he zoned completely out, his mind
rapidly registering the information she was relaying to him. "Lex?"
Snapping back into the here and now his confused expression etched
childishly on his face, he stared at her for confirmation.
"Yes, you heard me right." She smiled and patted his chest with her
palm. "I fell in love with you."
Lex's brow furrowed. "When? How? I mean..." He paused to collect
his thoughts. "Why?" His near whisper drew out a shudder from her
and she felt the anger seep into her veins. From all the women he had
loved before and had never had the truly meaningful emotion returned
to him.
"Because, Lex. You are everything." Her head tilted slightly as she
watched a bare understanding pitter patter across his face.
"Everything?" His breathy response caused her heart to reel in full
swing.
"Everything." With a final nod she placed her palms against his chest
once again and slightly rose to meet his lips. Placing a calm kiss
against his dry lips. When she pulled back she saw the utter
commotion that must have been racking his brain senseless. "Lex?"
She smiled widely and saw his eyes clear of any doubt.
"Really? Me?" Sounding so unlike his normally calm self she
reassured him with a chaste kiss on the corner of his mouth.
"Really, you."
His grin faultered a bit and his hands lay gently against her hips.
"You love me?"
She rolled her eyes at his oh so apparent remark. "Well, duh, Lex. I
didn't come back to Hickville, USA to tell you I was in love with
Clark Kent."
A slight growl emitted low in his throat as his hands tightened on her
soft flesh. "You better not have."
She looked up into his baby blues and her teeth grazed her lower lip.
"So, what do you say?"
Lex watched as the somehow fleeting moment of sureness evaporated and
gave way to an unsettled look in her eyes. "I say." His unfinished
thought wore heavily on her shoulders. "I love you too, Chloe." His
mouth met hers and they relished, for the first time ever, in a true
and understanding love that would last beyond their time.
