Nothing Really Matters: 1/1

"Miss Chloe Sullivan." Chloe stood more frail than normal, tired,
weak, a small fake smile graced her lips as she walked across the
makeshift stage and accepted her highschool diploma. Coming back down
the steps tears formed in her eyes as she reflexively searched the
audience for her father, knowing he wouldn'e be there. She took her
seat amongst her school mates and looked up to the heavens. A tear
rolled down her face and she looked down at the rolled up peice of
paper in her hands.

Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends
and we notice you don't come around
Me, I think it all depends
on you touching ground with us.

Pete leaned forward slightly and looked down the row. Two people down
sat his ex best-friend. Chloe Sullivan. Her face streaked with
tears. Her eyes sheltered beneath half hooded eyelids and dark pools
that had gathered over the last week that had passed. A week ago Gabe
had suffered from a heart attack. A week ago he watched his ex
best-friend bury her father. And no one said a word. Not so much as
a hello, or a handshake, not a hug. It broke his heart to see her
like this. So pale, so tired, so drained. So not Chloe.

But, I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.
And I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.

As her fellow classmates and graduates tossed their hats up into the
air she took hers off slowly and set it down on her chair. Inhaling
deeply she unbuttoned her graduation gown and let it drop to the
ground. She was done. And now, she could leave her own personal hell
behind her.

She fought her way through the huddled teens getting their pictures
taken and finally made it to her car.

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's
the best way to be.
When I'm all alone it's
the best way to be.
When I'm by myself
nobody else can say goodbye.

As the key shifted into the doorlock she leaned her head against the
top of the door. Her eyes closed tightly. Everything was supposed to
be okay now. Now that she was alone, she wouldn't feel the loss, the
hurt, the angry glances her way or the silent curses. She wouldn't
feel the heated looks Clark and Pete and Lana all gave her as they
spoke about her behind her back. Kind of like the ones she felt now.

Everything is temporary anyway.
When the streets are wet --
the color slip into the sky.
But I don't know why that means you and I are
- that means you and....

She turned around to be met by the four people she had worked so hard
to avoid. her eyes traveled from one set of cold eyes to a set of
sorrowful eyes, sympathetic ones, and then ones she couldn't decipher.

Lana was the first to speak. "So you're leaving." She smiled smugly.
Chloe narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest.

"Why do you want to know?" She asked forcefully. "Am I taking up too
much of your precious time what with all the gossipping?" Clark
butted in next of course.

"Don't Chloe. You brought this upon yourself. I just wish we could
all get past this and forget it never happened." Clark sighed and
shook his head, placing an arm around his girlfriend on his left.

Chloe snorted in disbeleif as tears formed again in her eyes.
"Please, Clark, you don't forget the mistakes anybody makes but
yourself. I could never get past what you've done to me." She let
the tears roll swiftly down her cheeks without wiping them away.
Because now, she didn't give a damn. They could all go to hell. And
then Pete's eyes were searching hers and she felt the little bit of
remorse she held for what she had done, all her faults flowing back
ten fold.

"I miss you, Chloe." His hand reached out and grazed hers. She
didn't flinch. Didn't pull back. The glare Lana sent him had no
effect whatsoever. "I really do." Chloe nodded slowly.

"I do too, Pete." because he had been with her from the very
beginning of the Clark and Lana soap opera. He had been the sidekick
just as much as she had. What with her crush on Clark and his on
Lana. She wondered if he was sorry for her because if the offer had
been presented to him, would he have done the same thing as her.

I quit -- I give up.
Nothin's good enough for anybody else it seems.
But I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else it seems.

Her eyes wandered back over from Lana to Clark to Pete and ended on
Lex Luthor. The only person of the four that had any reason
whatsoever to be mad at her in the first place. Stepping forward he
leaned down close to her ear. "I don't forgive you." She nodded
quietly and felt her throat constrict with a choked sob. "Because I
believe you didn't do anything." His hand fell to her hip and he
squeezed gently. "If you ever need to talk." She felt his hand
travel to the backside of her pants and then his fingers slide into
her back pocket. "For anything."

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's
the best way to be.
When I'm all alone it's
the best way to be.
When I'm by myself
nobody else can say...

She turned her back on them and slipped into her car. Without looking
back she pulled out of the parking lot. The business card in her back
pocket an uncomfortable reminder of how it was going to be from now
on. Just her. No one else. Not even some cold name on a business card.

Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends
and we notice you don't come around.

*insert a bad word here* those stupid narrow-minded cruel 'small' people of Smallville! Argh!

But I don't want Chloe to be alone. So stop playing with sequels, make it a nice long story, change the song to something about new hope and write chapter 3 now :P

Please? I was good, I just passed my first university exam... I think I deserve a reward... Please?
