Title: No Vacancy
Author: Lucy Mars
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: The past forever effects the present.
Pairing: A little bit of destructive Lex/Lana to explain the
bittersweet beauty of Lex/Chloe.
A.N. This is a weird thing that just popped into my head while I
was watching VH-1 of all things. The "I love the 80's" thing that
they were airing just reminded me of all the old PSA's that they use
to air on t.v. and all those 'just say no' ads. How I went from that
to this fic is as much a mystery to me, as it is probably will be to
you.

Lana can taste Chloe on his lips and it frightens her. It had
never occurred to her before that everyone who touches you leaves a
mark, fragile, transparent and eternal, temporary as it may be. No
matter how much she may try to deny it though, Lana can't help but be
constantly aware of Chloe's existence on him, in him, completely
encompassing him and screaming as they touch. The past forever
effecting the present and the future that neither women will ever
have with Lex.
One woman because she didn't live long enough to bask in the
brilliance of Lex's love.
The other woman because she will never be able to find a
place for herself in Lex's already full heart. Lex can never be her's
because he already belongs to Chloe. The no vacancy sign hangs cleary
above his heart, and never once has Lex ever led her to believe
differently with soothing words or meaningful looks, but Lana can't
find it in her to walk away.
To her, it seems something private of his and Chloe's that
she can never become a part of. Their bond is a love so strong and
eternal that it stretches beyond the boundaries of time and death,
marking both souls for eternity. No matter how much she longs to be
an integral part of Lex's life, Lana lives with the knowledge that
she never will be. Chloe was destined to leave Lex before her time
and Lana knows that she's destined to never be loved in return. Never
can she fulfill the role of Lex's leading lady. The shoes that Chloe
left her to fill are beyond anything Lana could ever wish to achieve
and she knows that. Lana's pretty sure that Lex knows that too.
When the doubts become too much and the coldness she feels
growing inside her becomes obvious to those around her, Lex kisses
her thoughts away and she's again the empty vessel she was at
fifteen. He fills her and for one blissful moment she is whole, but
like everything else in her life, the moment passes too soon and the
warmth that Lex teased her with has left her feeling colder than
before.
Chloe's fingers graze Lana's back through Lex's thumbs,
sending a reminder into her rapidly cooling blood that Lex isn't
her's. He never will be. Chloe branded him with her first kiss, as
Lex had branded her with his first touch. They will forever be two
parts of a whole, broken apart but never forgotten.
The warmth of his touch and the cold of his occupied state
intermix into bittersweet, lukewarm lovemaking. Her lips desperately
meet Lex's, her tongue exploring his mouth to find the flavor of
the woman he still called out for in his sleep. Lana's body spasms to
this obscure, somewhat androgynous touch, and for a moment, she
isn't sure whose name she's supposed to cry.
She's never been more confused, and yet things have never
been painfully clearer. It was never going to be a long term thing
with him and there is nothing she can do in order to change that. Her
life suddenly feels like a late night anti-drugs infomercial as she
lies next to Lex in his bed, their legs tangled together and
his arm wrapped around her. She's supposed to say no, isn't
she? Get the hell away before she gets more drawn into this epic tale
of a life lost in a love that was as beautiful as it was tragic.
She listens to his steady breaths and all she can think of is
that line she's heard so many times, but never read too much
into: just say no. His embrace around her tightens in his sleep and
he quietly moans Chloe's name. It's a soft whisper that he hums like
a prayer as his lips melt into a smile in his sleep. The tenderness
that lines the two syllbales of Chloe's name makes Lana's heart
constrict with that ache she's becoming strangley accustomed too.
She archs her neck up to look at his face, semi-tranquil in
his sleep and Lana feels a mixture of sorrow and and pity as she
watches the Great Lex Luthor fall deeper and deeper into the memories
that make his life worth living. The tense lines that plague him
during every waking moment he's not lost in memories of Chloe wither
away as the magical powers of dreams and fantasy bring him back the
woman he longs for during every waking moment.
Wanting to remind him that she's here for him, that she loves
him just as much as Chloe ever did, Lana leans over her lover and
tenderly kisses the lips she's fallen madly in love with. He sighs
into her mouth unconsciously and his sigh tastes vaguely of Chloe's
self efficiency.
Lost in the murky waters of a dream that feels as real as the
life he wished he were living, Lex tangels his fingers in Lana's
recently cut hair and moans as the feel of the silken strands against
his skin remind him of another woman and another time.
"Chloe," he murmurs in his sleep when Lana pulls away to fill
her deprived lungs and blink away burning tears.
Her heart sinks as she snuggles against his chest and falls
into restless sleep full of her own memories of the woman who haunts
both their lives.
She'll make the most out of what they have, whatever this
thing may be, and when it's time to leave, she tells herself she
will. However, both of them know that it's a lie. She has just about
the same amount of strength to walk away, as he has to forget.
The End.

Tell me what you thought. Constructive criticism or just nice
feedback are both desired. I'm always looking to improve my writing
and ego boosting is never frowned upon. ;]
Oddly enough I could see myself possibly doing a sequel to this, so
if there's enough response and demand, I most likely will write it.
