Given

People think if you're given a glimpse of your future, you can change it. Make it better. And you can, but like with anything else, there's a chance that will not be the case. You won't be able to change it, you won't be able to save yourself from the terrifying future. You'll try and try, but sometimes, you have no control over your destiny. That's why it's destiny.

It was a given from the beginning.

From when your mother told your father she was pregnant. When you were warm and content in her womb, completely unaware of what would happen in your life.

When you were four years old and your sweet-tempered mother began screeching and holding her hands to her ears. Your father hugging her, whispering to her while she wept.

It was a given when you were five years old and you found your mother had left and was probably never coming back. You can still smell the waffles burning.

When you were ten years old and you met a boy while waiting for your father to finish work. He was tall and had no hair, and he yelled at his dad in the middle of the Luthorcorp lobby. He was clearly angry and frustrated, but for all the emotion simmering underneath the surface, his breeding wouldn't allow him to not smile and nod politely to the young girl with brown hair and a crooked smile.

When you were fourteen and moved to a small town with your dad. Smallville was so different from Metropolis, and you felt out of place. But then you met two boys that would become your best friends.

When you were fifteen and met a man. He was tall and had no hair, and he smiled and shook your hand. It was nice to know that he hadn't lost the manners that had made him smile at the girl waiting for her daddy.

When you were sixteen and made a deal with the devil. Touched a darkness inside of you that you couldn't help but succumb to in the aftermath of betrayal. Another friend's secrets leading to the path of self-destruction.

When you were seventeen and made a deal with the devil's son. He was tall and had no hair, and he smiled at you twice in your lifetime. He vowed to protect you from his father when you couldn't stomach the person you were becoming anymore. When you looked at yourself in the mirror and loathed your reflection.

When you were seventeen and a half and testified against the devil in court. Your protector touched the small of your back and you couldn't help but feel like his hand was made to fit you.

When you entered the safe house with your dad and armed men in black uniforms pushed you both into a passage of the Underground Railroad. You felt the ground rumble under your feet and knew the devil hadn't given up.

When the tall man with no hair came to visit you when he could and held you when you needed it.

It was still your destiny when you discovered what happened to your mother. Why the woman with the perfect life disappeared one day, leaving her daughter and husband alone. Why she used to scream obscenities, scratching at her skull with sharp fingernails. And why she would stop suddenly and clutch her daughter close and rock, whispering words that made no sense.

When you were eighteen years old and the tall man with a smile kissed you and asked you to accompany him to a ball. It was beautiful, but ostentatious, and you wondered how he even managed to breathe in places like that. It was suffocating.

When you went on a second date, to a movie, and made out like teenagers in the back row. Neither of you remembered what the movie was about.

When you gave him your virginity in his bed and he was so gentle with you. When he stared so intently into your eyes, you felt like he was reading your soul. And when he whispered his declaration of love and you smiled and kissed him.

When you were twenty-one years old and you vowed to love each other for the rest of your lives. When you officially became Chloe Sullivan-Luthor.

When you were twenty-five and couldn't speak coherently anymore. The shadows flew across the walls, closing in on you, trying to seep into your skin. When you used a shard of glass to cut them out of your arm, sobbing the entire time. You just wanted them to leave you be.

When you were twenty-six years old and Lex committed you to Belle Reve. When you pleaded with him to let you go home and he stood there, his eyes glistening.

You're thirty years old today and Lex will be by soon to wish you a happy birthday. He'll hold your hand tightly, afraid to let you go. You won't squeeze his hand, nor will you smile at your husband. You will sit there, staring at him with dead eyes. Dead eyes that always make him flinch. You wish it didn't have to be this way, but you couldn't escape your destiny. It was your fate and it was a given from the beginning.

Trapped, you are a prisoner of your own mind.

End.

Great Googlie Mooglies!

Ow . . .

Tragic and beautiful and now I can't finish my story. Tell me again why Clark Kent is the hero of Smallville, when Lex is so wonderful.

This is a very beautiful story, despite its angst. I've missed a lot of episodes; did Chloe's mother really leave because of her mental health?
